Elsby & Co Chartered Accountants and Business Advisors has promoted two of its senior staff to Equity Partner positions in recognition of their dedicated work for the firm.

Leona Bateman and Claire Emery have both reached the pinnacle of their profession while working flexibly to balance family commitments and their roles as busy working mums. While taking very different routes into accountancy, Leona and Claire are both strong believers that other young women and new starters should be given the same opportunities they have experienced at Elsby & Co.

Working with specialists in every field

Leona explains: “Quite a few accountancy practices have one or two senior partners, but you can only get so far. Because Elsby & Co has continued to grow over the last several years the opportunities to move forward are always here.

“My journey into work started after I finished my A Levels. I originally wanted to be a florist but my mum said no and made me apply to accountancy firms.

“I started working with a business and went on to university to do my accountancy exams. I then worked with a couple of Top 20 companies, but found myself pigeon-holed in audit work and eventually joined a small practice which covered all aspects of accountancy.

“Again there was little room for career progression and I got to a point where I became a mum.

“In March 2016, I started with Elsby and Co and was made an associate partner in September the same year. A key difference with Elsby is that you get to work with specialists in every field, whether it’s in start-up support, accounts advice or software, you’re learning in a forward-thinking, flexible environment.

“As Equity Partners we’ve now bought shares in Elsby & Co which allows us to benefit from its growth over the coming years. In my role I always aim to be efficient and positive for my clients.

“I still have to juggle the school run with my husband, but my experience at Elsby & Co shows there’s real value in supporting staff. I know that if I need to take time out for my son’s sports day I can just do it. This level of understanding at work is priceless and something I’ve never experienced in another job before. It proves to me that if you trust your people, your business will reap dividends.”

Covering a variety of roles

Claire adds: “Looking at the beginnings of my career it felt like when I was at school everyone who did well went to university, but in reality that’s not what always happens. I went to college to study performing arts and after about six months realised it wasn’t for me, at which point my mum said I had to get a job.

“After a trial as a hairdresser I went back to the training provider and decided to choose the first option they had under ‘A,’ which turned out to be accountancy!

“This led me to work for a husband and wife team operating out of a converted garage where I received great training, but ultimately I wanted to work in a chartered accountancy firm with better career prospects and this led me to join Elsby & Co.

“I’ve now got four children and haven’t worked full-time since child number two arrived. Making sure the children are in the right place at the right time is a constant juggling act that I manage with the help of my husband and mum.

“Elsby & Co couldn’t have been more supportive in letting me work hours that suited me and always encouraged me to progress further. I’ve covered a variety of roles here, including client manager, senior manager and associate partner.

“At a time when many local accountants are selling up or their partners are retiring, I’m really pleased to be working with a firm that embraces growth and flexible working. Elsby & Co is an extraordinarily modern practice that genuinely embraces new technology and uses it to the advantage of its clients.

“Being an Equity Partner means I can help develop other members in my team and help them progress and reach their full potential as I have.

Clare Elsby, Elsby & Co Head of Marketing and Business Development, concluded: “We’re extremely proud of Leona and Claire’s success. They’ve become accountancy and business advice GPs for our local clients, meaning they’ve developed expertise in every aspect of the

profession.

“Given recent economic and political challenges facing the UK there’s never been a more important time for Northamptonshire companies to invest in their staff and, wherever possible, focus on supporting flexible working, training and career progression.

“Our new Equity Partners are living proof that a supportive work environment can make all the difference to an individual’s achievements and potential.
