Forklift training firm celebrates 25 years of business

A training provider which delivers award-winning results for its clients is celebrating a landmark anniversary this month.

Pegasus Lift Truck Training Ltd, based in Higham Ferrers, was founded by husband and wife team Giuseppe, fondly known to everyone as Pepe, and Dawn Girardi 25 years ago.

Dawn, who has previously worked in forklift sales and hire, recognised there was a gap in the market for a company to provide forklift truck training.

“When we started our company, we were really at the forefront of the industry,” explained Dawn. “Forklift truck training wasn’t statutory then like it is today and to begin with there were times when we almost had to talk company owners into giving their staff the training they needed. Today, fortunately businesses are a lot more safety conscious and safety standards have risen dramatically as a result.”

In the early days the business consisted of just Dawn and Pepe but fast forward 25 years and the firm works with a dedicated team of instructors, training all over the country and working around their shift patterns, day and night. To date the business has worked with hundreds of organisations, including HMP prisoners, the UK’s Border Force, Camelot Group and other high-profile names such as Alpro.

Pegasus is particularly proud of its relationship with Alpro after helping one of its employees to win the coveted Forklift Driver of the Year title at the Northamptonshire Logistics Forum awards last year.

Dawn said: “This was a real highlight for us because Alpro’s trainee was in competition with drivers from some of the biggest logistics companies in the area. It was thrilling to find out someone we’d trained on multiple trucks had won. To have our training recognised in that way was fantastic.”

Alpro HR Business Partner Clare Potter added: “Our forklift incidents over the past 6 years have reduced since our re-training programme with Pegasus. We’re so pleased we invited them to train with us.”

To mark its 25th anniversary, Pegasus is turning its logo from the usual gold to silver in May but plans for other celebrations are on hold following the outbreak of the Coronavirus Covid-19 pandemic.

Whilst many other training firms have been forced to cancel all their courses and furlough staff during the outbreak, Pegasus has found ways to continue to provide the services its clients so desperately need.

The firm is offering live, online accredited theory training and, wherever possible, is working with clients to provide practical one-to-one training in line with social distancing guidelines also supporting in-house trainers. Pegasus’ skilled instructors are also helping companies who need additional support to unload their pallets and goods.

In addition, Pegasus, in partnership with SpaceVac International, is helping workplaces to deep clean their premises safely.

Dawn said: “As the new Midlands distributor for Pegasus-SpaceVac, we can help organisations with Hi-level cleaning to control dust build-up in their workplaces in order to prevent related allergies. Traditionally, cleaning of this nature has been done with a scissor lift and you would have several people doing it. With SpaceVac’s hi-level vacuum cleaning equipment one person at ground level can operate lightweight interlocking carbon fibre poles - fitted with cameras - and clean up to 14 metres high. This is particularly helpful to organisations during the current pandemic.”

Pegasus’ new partnership with SpaceVac International is just one example of how the firm has thought outside the box to deliver its clients a comprehensive package of services.

Looking ahead to the future, Pegasus has plans to expand its business further as it starts to offer more advisory services to clients, alongside its traditional training services.

“We will continue to offer training but as our reputation for great service has grown, we’ve found that more and more clients are also turning to us for support,” said Giuseppe. “Companies are also coming to us for advice on a variety of topics, including Forklift equipment, Racking Training, Spills and Incident training, Ladder and Fire Marshall are just a few as we have links to professional trainers across the country, we’re able to help. We’re aiming to provide a one-stop shop for our clients because we always strive to go above and beyond for them – I think that’s why we continue to be successful 25 years on from our launch.”
