Pensions and a new pad for leading national law firm that is proud to call Milton Keynes home

Shoosmiths LLP is a full-service UK law firm with a presence across 13 cities, including Milton Keynes where the firm has a new base at 100 Avebury Boulevard.

For the last 15 years, Shoosmiths’ pensions team has provided clients of all industries and sectors broad and deep legal expertise with an exceptional client experience, where the firm seeks to not only impart technical advice but to add value and find solutions to challenges businesses face every day.

A lot of clients of the large national team are trustees of final salary, money purchase pension or auto-enrolment schemes as well as hybrid arrangements. The firm also advises businesses on changes they might make to their pension arrangements and on compliance with the law and Regulatory authorities. There have also been new flexibilities introduced around pensions and how these are accessed have been welcome but have brought into focus issues such as how-to tax pensions in the future and sadly pension scams.

Shoosmiths’ lawyers also work with our property teams where pensions schemes hold property investments and support corporate on business reorganisations and sales and acquisitions. The firm also works very closely with its sizeable employment team on areas such as salary sacrifice arrangements, executive appointments and terminations, employment contracts and employee communications. Shoosmiths aims to keep our clients and contacts up to date with seminars and the firm will be running online breakfast seminars this May covering a key new piece of legislation, the new Pensions Bill.

COVID-19 and pensions

In the current climate as you would imagine a portion of the firm’s pensions work is focused on questions around the employee retention scheme being offered by the government, looking at the impact on pension funding and contributions. We are also advising trustees following requests from employers who sponsor their schemes for assistance with financial strains they may be experiencing. These requests range from agreeing to change benefits to allowing contribution holidays to ease cashflow pressures.
