The Qube, a modular building manufacturer and installer from Northampton, has created a new Year 6 block at a primary school in South Shields.
The project came about as a result of a thorough process, which started with a chance meeting at The Academies Show at Birmingham NEC, an event at which The Qube was exhibiting.
Alex Golden, Head of Ridgeway Primary Academy in South Shields, was also at The Academies Show and invited The Qube and two other companies he met at the show to the school to put together a design and quotation for a new block for Year 6 students.
The Qube won the contract, the 2,300 sq ft building at Ridgeway Primary Academy took eight weeks to design and manufacture, with the floor, wall and roof panels manufactured in a factory in Northamptonshire. It then took a further seven weeks to erect it on an unused area of playground on site. The building features two classrooms, toilets and two group rooms, separated by acoustic bi-folding doors, which can be pulled back to create one large room when needed.
Jordan Spittle, Business Manager at The Qube, said: “We worked with Alex to design and build a solution that met the school’s needs, which were that they were low on space for Year 6 students. The new block is flexible in its design, giving students the space they need as they grow and get older and it allows teachers to use the space creatively in their lessons.
“The school had a tight deadline, which we exceeded. This enabled the staff to get into the block early and furnish it ready for the students coming back to school after the October
Alex said: “We first met at The Academies Show and saw The Qube’s stand and two other exhibitors offering similar products. We arranged meetings with all three and then looked at previous projects they had all worked on. Everyone gave such glowing reports about The Qube, so that is the direction we went in.
“The building process was seamless, right from the initial tender process - which was really clear and concise - and the price fitted our budget. The Qube team was very attentive from that moment on and as we moved through the build, up until the launch day. The service and end result have just been superb!”
Ridgeway Primary Academy held a launch event in November to showcase the space and the new Year 6 block was officially opened with a ribbon cutting ceremony attended by teachers, students and The Qube team.
The Qube is based in Northamptonshire but works nationwide, creating bespoke modular buildings for businesses and schools. As the panels are constructed off-site, the actual builds are, generally, quicker and less disruptive than conventional construction projects.
