A book capturing the story of one of the most successful local charities of recent years has gone on sale in Northamptonshire.
She’s One Crazy Lady by Glennis Hooper, who launched the Crazy Hats Breast Cancer Appeal just over 20 years ago, looks back over the highs and lows of a small charity that set out to improve local breast cancer services and ended up raising more than £3.4m by the time the charity closed in 2022.
The book invites readers to get to know Glennis and share her incredible journey through personal, health and career battles – detailing the frustrations, losses, gains and successes. It’s also packed with photographs from events and special occasions over the years, showing just how many people, organisations and businesses embraced the charity’s aims and ambitions and raised money for the cause.
The charity was always focused on spending the money it raises on facilities and equipment that would directly benefit breast cancer sufferers in Northamptonshire.
In the early days, women needing breast reconstruction had to travel to Leicester Royal Infirmary for surgery, so initially the charity purchased equipment for that hospital. Over subsequent years, both Kettering and Northampton General Hospitals have increased the levels of breast cancer services they offer, and so the Crazy Hats team worked with medical staff to buy equipment and fund services.
Over the years hundreds of local companies supported the Crazy Hats Breast Cancer Appeal through one-off events, or choosing it as their Charity of the Year, or by supporting events like the Crazy Hats Walk that took place in Wicksteed Park every year.
