At Winchester House, our Pre-Prep is a vibrant and close-knit family community where every child is truly known. At the heart of our approach is the Creative Curriculum, a thoughtfully designed, skills-based programme that inspires children to explore, question and create. Each term, learning is woven through a carefully curated topic, connecting subjects such as Science, ICT, Art and Music into one cohesive theme.
This approach creates hands-on, immersive learning experiences that spark excitement and curiosity. For example, a space-themed term might see children stepping inside a visiting planetarium to learn about the stars, creating their own rocket models in Design and Technology, and writing imaginative space adventures in English. School trips to castles, museums and farms further enhance classroom learning, helping children make real-world connections that deepen their understanding.
Embracing technology and the outdoors
While creativity is at the heart of what we do, innovation drives how we do it. Each classroom is now equipped with interactive smart boards, and the introduction of new iPads has enhanced the integration of ICT across year groups. Outdoor learning is equally vital. Our Secret Garden is a magical walled space where children can apply their skills in the natural world, while Forest School sessions allow pupils to build dens and explore woodland. By learning in these diverse environments, children develop independence, resilience, and a deep connection to the world around them.
Giving pupils a voice
The Student Council plays an essential role in empowering children to take ownership of their school experience. With representatives from Reception to Year 2, the council meets monthly to share ideas and discuss changes. Many of these ideas have already come to life, such as introducing a chess club – a wonderful addition that encourages logical thinking and teamwork. The Student Council ensures our pupils feel involved, heard and proud of the role they play in shaping their school community.
Nurturing wellbeing and confidence
Pastoral care is at the heart of everything we do. Our Wellness and Sensory Room provides a calm, supportive space where children can take a moment to recharge orrefocus, promoting emotional wellbeing and self-regulation. Buddy Benches in our playground ensure no child feels left out, and our Year 2 Buddies keep a watchful eye to make sure everyone feels included during playtimes.
