This episode features the owners of Midland Scaffolding Services. Ben is joined by Commercial Director Amie Bailey, Finance Director Lisa Rooney, and Contracts Director Ben Ekins.
Midland Scaffolding Services have supported some of the biggest construction projects across the midlands and beyond. Since being founded in Northampton in 1982, the business has grown from strength to strength and continues to develop.
A constantly changing industry
With a combined 43 years of experience between the three owners, they have all seen the construction industry adapt and change over the years.
Lisa reflects on how when she first joined, she faced sexism and judgement in the scaffolding workplace. Thankfully, the industry has made a lot of progress in breaking down these gender barriers. However, construction remains the most male-dominated sector.
Lisa and Amy want to encourage more women into scaffolding and construction work. They also mention the diverse roles which may cater to those less interested in physical labour.
Ben discusses how sustainability and Health and Safety regulations have dramatically increased in the past decade. The company works hard to protect their workers and do their due diligence, and this comes with a hefty amount of safety standards paperwork.
Supporting the community
Midland Scaffolding Services are passionate about doing their part for charity. Last year, three members of the team, including Ben, ran an incredible 52.6 miles to raise money for Caudwell Children’s Charity. The company came out to see off the runners, cheer them on, and celebrate the emotional moment when they crossed the finish line. Ben has more running challenges on the horizon, including a marathon and the BPN Go One More Ultra challenge.
The business also worked on the Ronald McDonald House in Birmingham. This building allows families to remain close to the hospital where their children are staying for treatment.
Lisa is a Regional Chair at the National Access & Scaffolding Confederation. The group does valuable work to uplift and support the construction industry.
The team are keen to spread the word about the scaffolding sector and encourage more young people to consider it as a career.
