A gift to get you on the move

Remember the excitement of getting a new bike for Christmas?

Imagine that combined with a proper grown-up mode of transport that’s fun – and reliable, practical, stylish and environmentally friendly. But, above all, fun!

The Tubby Tyre Scooter Company, founded in 2018 by Steve Mirfin, offers two road-legal versions of its two-wheel electric scooters, offering an eye-catching alternative mode of transport for those on the morning commute, running errands, stopping off for coffee – or just out to enjoy the ride. There’s also a No-Road model, as well as a road-legal three-wheel version, plus the Fairway edition that has a refrigerated section and room for a golf bag for those who want to cover the 18-holes in style.

All Tubby Tyre Scooters are built to order by Steve at his workshop in Northampton. Once built, each scooter is individually tested by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), registered, a number plate issued and then delivered to the customer’s door.

Steve said: “The Tubby Tyre Scooter Company was a new venture for me after years in the automotive industry and I wanted to create a scooter that was just a little bit different. The wide, ‘Tubby’ tyres gave the company its name, but there are other elements, like the oversized LED headlamp and the customisation that make them special.

“Other notable features include an alarm and immobiliser, keyless starting, a USB connection, mobile phone holder and a sprung saddle.”

The scooters are classed as a mopeds and can be ridden by anyone over 16 with the correct type of driving licence, including provisionalplus CBT. With a maximum speed of 28 mph and, assuming a driver of average size and weight, the scooters have a range of up to 30 miles and the battery can be charged on a normal household plug in around six hours.

“The top-of-the-range Special One can be customised and includes a choice of nine frame colours, but which model is for you all comes down to preference,” said Steve. “One of my most recent customers relies on an electric wheelchair, which has a maximum speed of four miles an hour. The three-wheel version has given him the stability he needed to get mobile but it no longer takes him ages to get where he wants to be.

“The scooters would make an ideal Christmas gift for anyone who wants a fun way of getting around. I’ve been out and about with the scooters and they always turn heads, yet at the same time they’re convenient, easy to charge, drive and park.”

Delivery time is around six to eight weeks, so there’s plenty of time to place an order in time for Christmas, even with a little bit of additional hint-dropping time factored in!
