A taste of tropical sunshine this winter

Some tropical sunshine is always welcome on a winter day and – as the judges at the Weetabix Northamptonshire Food and Drink Awards recognised – June Plum is the place to get it.

And now, to celebrate the victory, those wanting to enjoy more of June Plum’s award-winning food have the chance to win free jerk chicken or vegan jerk seitan for a year, as well as taking advantage of a special January discount.

The Wellingborough restaurant and take-away was named Gold winner in the World Cuisine Restaurant of the Year category at the awards ceremony at the beginning of November.

Situated on Cambridge Street, the family-run Jamaican restaurant has built a reputation for authentic flavours and warm hospitality. Everything is prepared from scratch on site, but it’s what Jodi Jenny from June Plum refers to as the ‘island vibes’ that set the restaurant apart. She said:

“People love the food, but just as important, it’s a place that has great vibes and where unforgettable memories are made. Every dish tells a story and the reggae music transports you to the Caribbean, and everyone is made to feel like there’s always a warm welcome awaiting them.”

Available to eat in or take away, the menu includes classic island dishes featuring curried goat, ackee and saltfish, fried chicken that has been brined in lime jerk buttermilk and hummingbird sauce glaze jerk snapper. There’s also Jamaican patties and coco bread, rotis and sandwiches – with all the June Plum bread being made in-house.

A side of sweetcorn and plantain fritters or fries flavoured with Boom Shakka Lakka spice mix is the perfect accompaniment to the mains and, for those taking a liking to any of the special sauces and flavours, there’s a range of bottled sauces, pastes, spice mixes, seasoning and pickles to take away and incorporate into your home-cooked creations.

The drinks menu is just as tropical with a range of cocktails including, of course, rum punch, as well as wines, beers and ciders, soft drinks and juices. Jodi said:

“We use the best locally sourced ingredients wher- ever possible, and the chefs combine them with the traditional, authentic tastes and spices of Jamaican cookery. Every mouthful bursts with flavour.

“We love cooking for people and seeing our regular customers and hopefully now that we have been recognised at the Food and Drink Awards we’ll get a lot more people coming in to find out more about the fantastic food and experience those island vibes.

“Coming up to Christmas the take-away menu is perfect when you’ve got family and friends getting together, or in the New Year when you’re tired of turkey and want something a little bit different.”

Customers mentioning All Things Business during January will receive a 15% discount and will be entered into June Plum’s draw to win free jerk chicken or vegan jerk seitan for a year.
