Having always worked and lived in this area, I am passionate about the success of my clients, our business and the wider community.
Having acted for transport and warehousing clients for a large part of my career, and as Head of the firm’s specialist transport sector group in recent years, I’m proud in the way we at MHA have driven this important part of the business forward.
We are delighted to announce that we are once again headline sponsor for the Northamptonshire Logistics Awards for 2023. We have been involved since 2016 and are already looking forward to the awards evening on October 13 at The Park Inn in Northampton. This event is always a great celebration of all that’s good in the industry locally.
Over the years of our involvement, we have attended many of the regular Northamptonshire Logistics Forum meetings run by Tony Bellott and Charlotte Patrick, providing specialist speakers on key issues and topics happening within the sector. In addition, we have been an active part of the judging panel for the awards each year and we are always reminded that this sector is all about the people, not just large warehouses and lorries, which is what is often in the forefront of people’s minds.
Our approach to advising clients in this area is, as always, a mixture of deep understanding of the individual business plan and shareholders’ goals, coupled with access to relevant experts as required. This is underpinned by the trust built up through years of consistent delivery.
A new development that we have recently recruited is an experienced ESG consultant locally to join our wider national ESG team. They are advising on areas from putting in place an ESG framework to carbon reporting, and from climate risk assessments to your net zero journey. The team are very practical in their advice with cashflow, and profit impacts of the journey properly considered.
Due to the significant levels of capital invested, whether vehicles, machinery or warehousing, let alone working capital, it has been no surprise that our specialist Banking & Finance division and our Corporate Finance team, have always been actively involved. These teams have supported clients with requirements from asset and invoice financing, through to full-scale re-banking exercises connected to funding shareholder exits.
With the recent significant increases in interest rates, they have been helping clients with the refinancing of short-term Covid support loans, with those amortising over a much longer period to really help reduce the impact on monthly cashflow.
Whilst discussing capital expenditure we ensure our clients attract tax relief wherever possible to help with affordability. Whether it is capital allowances connected to efficient lighting schemes or heating and cooling systems, or R&D tax breaks on developing technological advancements, our experienced tax advisors are on hand, led by our resident Tax Partners, Rachel Nutt and Nathan Sutcliffe.
VAT and Duty are also subjects where advice is very often required, whether it be for the client themselves or their own international customers that they are supporting in the UK. Our experienced VAT Partner, Alison Horner has advised on high-value commercial property transactions and our international network, Baker Tilly International, handles complicated international supply chain advice. With the enormous growth in e-commerce space in the region, the international element of our advice will only continue to gain significance.
An increasingly important part of our business is MHA Caves Wealth, our specialist financial services division, which we acquired last year. Being so well established in Northamptonshire they had already been acting for a number of the family-owned companies in this sector. In the past year detailed financial advice, dovetailed with IHT and CGT advice from our tax advisors has been vital to a number of clients navigating the difficult matter of succession from one generation to the next.
We’re always keen to make new relationships in this sector, so if you would like to discuss your requirements further, we’d love to hear from you.
