Privileged access to the inner sanctum that is the Saints’ home dressing room at Franklin’s Gardens was just one of the memorable aspects of the recent Lunch With Legends event.
Organised with one eye on the forthcoming Rugby World Cup, which starts in September, the invitation-only event welcomed special guests Sir Clive Woodward and Steve Thompson MBE to join guests from businesses and organisations across Northamptonshire.
As well as listening to two of the key protagonists from the 2003 campaign in Australia, the last time England won the trophy, share their thoughts on the home nations’ chances this year in France, guests also enjoyed a drinks reception and lunch, and a tour of the cinch Stadium at Franklin’s Gardens.
All proceeds from the event will go to the HEAD ON Foundation, which was set up by Steve Thompson to help and support those living with, or caring for people with brain injury, early-onset dementia, mental health conditions and other neurological problems.
Steve, who played in that famous final in 2003, was diagnosed with dementia at just 43, a condition that is thought to be due to the punishment he took on the field, the endless hard-hitting tackles he endured in his years at the top of his sport.
Ben Thomas, Managing Director of All Things Business, said:
“We were incredibly proud to bring Steve and Sir Clive to Franklin’s Gardens to entertain our guests with their thoughts on the game now and back when they were both so heavily involved in England’s success.
“To have access to the Saints home dressing room was a real thrill for all those guests who enjoy their rugby and who have watched the Northampton greats over the years. The feedback about the event was excellent and, of course, we raised some vital funds for Steve’s foundation.”
