Saturday November 13 saw the Business Improvement District (BID) for Milton Keynes officially launch Christmas in the city, with stage performances, fireworks, lasers, snow and plenty of festive spirit.
Families and friends from across Milton Keynes came together outside Midsummer Place to enjoy singing, dancing and some very merry mascots on the MyMiltonKeynes stage, hosted by local radio station, MKFM.
As darkness descended, Father Christmas joined the Mayor of Milton Keynes, Mohammed Khan, and breakfast show presenters, Darren and Lia, as they counted down to the big switch-on of 64,000 LED lights.
The lights, funded by BID investment, and which will brighten central Milton Keynes every day until the New Year are in the shape of parcels and the three kings and are wrapped around every tree lining central MK’s boulevard.
Lia Christodoulou, breakfast presenter on MKFM said:
“Wow, how incredible to turn on the most epic Christmas Light display in Milton Keynes.”
Successfully mandated by businesses in 2017, MyMiltonKeynes has provided £5m of additional improvements to central Milton Keynes, creating a safer, cleaner, better connected, smarter and more vibrant centre for all. The BID is now in an important stage in its history, as it awaits the results of its recent ballot, which will determine if it is able to continue to provide this kind of fantastic free event, as well as many other essential improvements.
Melanie Beck MBE, Chief Executive of MyMiltonKeynes, said:
“We are still buzzing from hosting such an amazing event. It was incredible to see so many people celebrating Christmas again in Milton Keynes and we hope that the results of our ballot will mean we can continue to host these essential community events for many years to come!”
