New year, same crisis – be the business that changes lives

As we all consider our New Year’s resolutions, and businesses reflect on their goals, values and community impact for the coming year, it’s the perfect opportunity to reassess a firm’s charitable giving strategy.

As giving experts, Milton Keynes Community Foundation invite local businesses to work with them to develop their giving strategies. By aligning these strategies with business goals and commitment to making a difference, the Foundation ensures contributions are fairly distributed to charities and community groups in Milton Keynes, helping your generosity make the biggest impact in the place you and your employees live and work.

As we enter 2025, poverty is still a harsh reality for many local families and, throughout the winter months, the Foundation continues to shine a light on this urgent crisis, raising crucial funding for local charities providing essential support to those in need.

One story highlighted by the campaign is that of Lottie, a 19-year-old carer from Wolverton, who has been looking after her mother since she was 14. She can’t work or pursue a career because her mum needs constant care. But nobody sees her poverty, and nobody knows her struggle.

Nobody knows that her dad left when she was just a child and that since then, she has had to care for her mother who has a long-term illness. Nobody knows that she doesn’t have many friends because she can’t go out and leave her mum on her own. Nobody knows that she has to make do on the little benefits they receive and that she frequently goes without food so that her mum can eat. Nobody knows that she regularly has to visit food and clothes banks to feed and clothe herself and her mum. Nobody knows because nobody really sees her. She’s invisible, and so is her desperate situation.

If you knew, what would you do?

Lottie’s story mirrors the struggles of thousands of local families and individuals in Milton Keynes quietly struggling to meet basic needs as expenses continue to rise. Her story is one of many that highlight the urgent need for greater community support and resources. A local business could help make a real difference to people like Lottie.

With a deep understanding of the city’s needs, the Foundation specialise in helping businesses create meaningful and impactful giving strategies, saving valuable time and resources. As a fundholder or business member, you can support the causes closest to yours and your employees’ hearts, while reaching grassroots organisations across Milton Keynes that are doing amazing work. By incorporating thoughtful giving into your plans, you can create positive change locally while fostering a sense of purpose among your team.
