After a year off due to the pandemic, Niftylift was once again able to host its Women in Engineering Day on Wednesday, November 17.
The firm’s fifth such event took place at its headquarters in Shenley Wood, and was aimed at Year 9, 10 and 11 female students from the local community. More than 120 students and teachers attended the event (the biggest to date), from schools including Watling Academy, Oakgrove, Thornton College, Bridge Academy, Denbigh, Ousedale, MK Academy, Shenley Brook End and Radcliffe School.
The event offered the girls a unique opportunity to learn about the different career paths available within the field of engineering and the practical application of different engineering specialisms within the company.
The day included tours of the factory, production assembly tasks, control and hydraulic systems demonstrations, a CAD workshop where the girls got to design an e-stop using Creo and discussions with our female staff about their routes into their chosen engineering careers.
The event was a great success and feedback from the students and teachers has been very positive, with the girls’ favourite activity being the CAD e-stop design activity.
Through events like Women in Engineering Day, Niftylift is helping schools to promote STEM subjects to more than just the obvious candidates. By championing the creative aspects of the discipline, by enthusing and inspiring young females, it is hoped a new generation of female engineers will be encouraged to take their place in an exciting, vibrant and growing industry.
