Senior partner retires from national architecture practice after 36 years!

National Architecture Practice, GSSArchitecture, have announced the forthcoming retirement of Tom Lyons, who will be retiring as a Partner of the Practice on 30th June 2024.

After 36 years with GSS, 27 of those as a Partner, Tom will be passing over the reins as Senior Partner to Jonathan Hunter, whilst Ian Bray will continue as Managing Partner.

The Practice has been working hard over the past couple of years to ensure a seamless transition. As such, whilst Tom will be retiring as a Partner, he will continue to work with GSS and their clients on a consultancy basis.

Tom joined the Practice in 1988, became an Associate in 1995 and a Partner in 1997. In 2018 he was promoted to the role of Senior Partner and has been instrumental in the continued success and national growth of the Practice. During his time at GSS, Tom has overseen the opening of the Gloucester, Newcastle, Leeds, and Milton Keynes Studios and has helped grow the team significantly.

During his 36 years, Tom has delivered over 700 projects, including involvement with over 300 schools across the country. His work has also included large-scale masterplans, regeneration projects, new builds, and conversions. Tom is also a school Governor, a National Lead Member of Association for Learning Environments and is involved in various community groups and projects.

Speaking on his retirement, Tom said,

“It has been a pleasure to work at GSS for 36 years. Having moved from another architecture studio during my university studies, which I completed on a part-time basis, I have seen major growth and development in the practice. As a consultant, I will continue to be involved in the many exciting and innovative projects GSS are delivering nationally.”

Jonathan Hunter comments,

“We are extremely grateful for the commitment and dedication that Tom has given to GSS and the wider community over the past 36 years. It has been pleasure to work with him and to learn from him. From everyone at GSS, we wish him a happy and healthy retirement. I’m sure we will still be seeing a lot of him as he continues to support GSS on a consultancy basis!”
