Why supporting women leaders is a business imperative

As we count down to the Women Leaders’ Awards later this month, the sense of excitement is undeniable. The nominations are in, the panel of judges have been hard at work reviewing submissions and interviewing the remark-able finalists – the stage is set, and soon, we will come together to celebrate the incredible achievements of women who are leading change, breaking barriers and lighting the way for future generations.

While the night itself will be a glittering celebration, particularly as we mark the tenth anniversary of the Women Leaders’ Awards, we must remember that this is not simply a moment in time – it is part of a much bigger, ongoing journey.

In a world where conversations about gender equity can sometimes feel like they’re treading familiar ground, it’s easy to believe that progress is inevitable. But the truth is, real change doesn’t just happen because time passes; it happens because people show up, stand up and choose to act – again and again.

One of our judges summed this up beautifully after reviewing the inspiring stories behind this year’s nominations. He shared how reading these powerful accounts made him think of his own daughter: “I want her to grow up in a world where there are no barriers to her ambition,” he said. “But that future won’t happen by chance. It will take all of us, working together, with real intention.”

That’s why the Women Leaders’ Awards isn’t just about a night of applause and accolades. It’s about building a movement – a living, breathing community of businesses, organisations and individuals who believe that celebrating and supporting women leaders should be woven into the very fabric of how we live, work and lead.

This commitment is powerfully reflected in the incredible organisations that have chosen to sponsor this year’s awards. Indeed, many of these sponsors have been on this decade-long journey with us. One such organisation is PJ Care, whose unwavering support dates back to the very first Women Leaders Awards. This is, of course, no coincidence – PJ Care was founded by Jan Flawn CBE, who not only built an award-winning business dedicated to specialist neurological care but also founded the Women Leaders initiative itself. Her vision was clear from the start: to create a platform that both celebrates and actively supports the advancement of women in leadership. PJ Care’s ongoing sponsorship is a testament to that founding vision, demonstrating how businesses can lead by example and embed inclusion into their very DNA.

Other sponsors have also embodied this long-term commitment. Oracle Red Bull Racing, a proud sponsor of the 2025 Women Leaders Awards, exemplifies this spirit perfectly. Their commitment to inclusivity and leadership is demonstrated not only through their support of these awards but through their pioneering F1 Academy initiative, designed to drive meaningful change in motorsport by providing opportunities for more women and girls to thrive in the sport.

Jo Fleet, Group HR Director said: “By celebrating these inspiring individuals as well as our own talent, we not only honour their achievements but also help pave the way for future generations of women leaders.”

Our headline sponsor, NHBC, now marking a decade of partnership with the Women Leaders’ Awards, shares this long-term vision. Speaking passionately about why this sponsorship matters, Neha Sutton, Co-Chair of NHBC’s Women’s Network, said: “To raise standards in house building and protect homeowners, we must continue to create a dynamic, modern and inclusive organisation – encouraging talented people from all backgrounds and genders to share new perspectives and ideas. Our continued sponsorship reaffirms our commitment to closing the gender gap, fostering a progressive and welcoming workplace, and showcasing the rewarding career opportunities available to everyone in our industry.”

At the heart of Milton Keynes, the MK Community Foundation reminds us that leadership also happens quietly, every day, in the selfless work of volunteers. Its sponsorship of the Community Impact (Volunteer) Award honours those whose dedication and passion make our community stronger, and the Foundation reminds us: “Volunteers are the heartbeat of Milton Keynes’ voluntary sector.” But its work doesn’t stop at recognition, MK Community Foundation takes an equity-first approach to funding, actively seeking out seldom-heard voices and ensuring that historically underrepresented communities have access to the support they need to thrive.

Across every industry, the call to action is the same. Helix understands that supporting women leaders is essential to unlocking innovation and creating diverse, future-ready workplaces, especially in the technology sector where representation still lags behind. MHA reminds us that leadership comes in many forms – and sometimes the most powerful leaders are those who don’t fit the traditional mould, saying: “We are committed to recognising women who lead with impact and ambition. The actions we take today shape a brighter, more inclusive tomorrow.”

As Chair of Women Leaders, I have seen first-hand how this collective energy, built over ten years, continues to make a lasting difference. Every ticket sold and every sponsorship secured is more than a transaction – it is a statement of belief in a future where every woman can step forward with confidence, knowing the path ahead is open and full of possibility.

Let’s make this year’s celebration the most impactful yet. Let’s honour a decade of progress and commit to the next decade of action. And above all, let’s keep showing up for each other, with positivity, with purpose, and with the unwavering belief that together, we can build a brighter, more inclusive future for everyone.
