Women’s team wraps up the season in perfect fashion

Bedford Blues Women secured league invincibility on a joyous afternoon at Goldington Road as they saved their best performance to the final day in a 45-5 victory over Stockwood Park Ladies.

It was seventh heaven for Eddie Rennell and Peter Frost’s side as they wrapped up their title winning season in the perfect fashion to get the title party under way and start the bedlam of the post-game celebrations.

At the start of the season, the team set themselves the challenge of replicating Peterborough’s perfect league campaign, and they did it in some style in front of a seasonal record crowd, securing a twelfth victory from as many games.

In what may turn out to be her farewell appearance, Heidi Lawson scored four as she ended the campaign as Blues Women’s top try scorer, including a personal tally of six against Stockwood Park.

Emma Graham played a blinder and got two deserving tries, while Alyce Trude rounded off the scoring with a neat finish. Skipper Lucy Middleton kicked 5/7 conversions in a real team performance that showcased exactly why they’re the champions this season.

Bedford Blues Women were formed in June 2020 as part of the club’s development plan with Bedford Junior Blues to have a pathway through from age-grade to Women’s adult rugby.

Ahead of the 2023/24 season, it was announced the squad would be permanently re-locating to Goldington Road.
