Room to develop and grow
Thornton College day and boarding school for girls, located between Milton Keynes and Buckingham, is set in 26 acres of beautiful grounds. The main school building is a manor house dating back to the 14th century and it became a school in 1917, founded by the Sisters of Jesus and Mary.

The school is very proud of its rich history, exceptional pastoral care for the individual and its strong emphasis on core Christian values, though it is also proud of the fact that it is a forward looking school, with exciting opportunities both in and outside the classroom, and where girls of all faiths and no faith are equally welcome.

Thornton College is part of an international family of J&M schools in 28 countries around the world. This gives students the best of opportunities for international partnership programmes, celebrations, projects and exchanges, enabling each student to grow a unique global outlook and cultural intelligence.

Boarding is ‘upstairs’ in the main manor house, offering a home-from-home flexi, weekly or termly boarding experience. The one site school ensures that the transition from early years into pre-prep, prep, senior and Sixth Form is smooth and the older girls are role models for younger students ensuring plenty of opportunities for mixed age group activities.

The school’s academic results are excellent and comparable with high-achieving competitive schools while having a varied ability intake. Thornton’s co-educational nursery creates a sense of wonder, making children’s introduction to learning so exciting. Woodland walks, cookery, ballet, French, music and movement, library time and a host of other regular pursuits enhance the play and craft activities and excite their young minds.

“We are an incredibly diverse and multi-talented community, where each girl is cherished and supported in being the very best version of herself. The individual child is at the heart of each decision, activity and opportunity.”

As a Forest School, girls at Thornton excel inside and outside the classroom with prep school children enjoying the outdoor classroom in woodlands, exploring and pond dipping in the eco-habitat park.

Thornton College is leading the introduction of robotics into prep school curriculum. Students in senior and Sixth Form enjoy overseas sporting tours, World Challenges, Duke of Edinburgh (with Sixth Formers achieving their Gold Awards); EPQs; partnership work with Thornton College’s heritage link school, St Columba’s School for Boys, such as STEAM events, UCAS and careers events and debating.

The Sixth Form, which opened in 2016, offers a wide subject choice, small class sizes and individual attention with future pathway support. Sixth Form students undertake the Oxbridge programme, gain competitive apprenticeships, and apply and receive Russell Group offers.
