Top award wins for health and safety experts

News, Property | November 1, 2021

John Crockett health

One of the county’s top health and safety consultancies has won two prestigious awards.

Acorn Safety Services, based in Northampton, has won the UK Best Health & Safety Consultancy award at the SME News Midlands Enterprise Awards, which showcase the region’s industry leaders.

News of the win came hot on the heels of Acorn’s Health and Safety Manager, John Crockett, winning The Alan McArthur Unsung Hero Award at The Safety Health and Excellence (SHE) Awards. These national awards celebrate innovation and achievements in the health and safety sector and attract hundreds of entries from across the UK.

During the past 45 years, John has helped tens of thousands of clients, including the likes of Bovis Construction, London Midlands Trains, HSBC Data Centres. BP, British Gypsum, Heathrow Airport, McDonald’s, Taylor Woodrow and Network Rail.

Since joining Acorn in early 2020, John has helped more than 600 of its clients with their health and safety needs and helped the firm to further extend its extensive range of services.

He said:

“Other than my professional qualifications this is the first award I’ve won – I’ve always worked hard at my job but I’ve never sought to be rewarded. I was thrilled that Acorn put me forward for the award because it shows they appreciate what I do for the business and have recognised the positive feedback I’ve had from our clients.

“To go on to win the award was incredible because I was up against some tough competition. I’m really pleased for myself, but I’m also delighted for Acorn because winning these awards shows people that Acorn is somewhere they can go for expert health and safety advice in a wide range of areas.”

Since joining Acorn, John has helped it to launch its Retained Health & Safety Consultant Service and has spearheaded the launch of its free 30-minute Health and Safety Review Surgery in which John takes organisations through Acorn’s 20-point Health and Safety Compliance Audit. This forms the basis of a complimentary Health and Safety Compliance Report that identifies where organisations are getting health and safety right and where their business may be at risk.

John, whose expertise is also regularly sought by the HSE, police and top universities, added:

“Our free video calls are one of the many things which set Acorn apart from other consultancies. We’re passionate about what we do so we’re happy to offer this advice for free to help keep people safe and prevent firms from being prosecuted.”

Thanks to John, Acorn also now offers Construction Design & Management (CDM) Consultancy Services to give construction clients, principal designers and principal contractors peace of mind that they’ve appointed the right people and organisations to their project at the right time. The firm has also introduced fire risk assessment services.

Acorn director Ian Stone said:

“We’re so proud to have won these awards and are thrilled for John, whose expert guidance has saved countless lives, prevented many injuries and saved so many clients from issues that would have ended in prosecutions.”
