Care and support for those facing difficult times

Legal, News | January 5, 2022

Caring and thoughtful are just two of the adjectives regularly used to describe the Family Law team at DFA Law, and it’s true that much of their work revolves around issues that are difficult and emotional.

The team understands that it is not just legal advice that clients seek, but also the support and understanding of their situation at a difficult time in their lives.

In order to deal with an expanding workload, the firm’s family law team has recently expanded and strengthened to four lawyers with the arrival of Emma Kirkland in November, joining Kelly Willmott and Paula Futer in the team headed up by Partner Rachel Adams. Complementing the team further is Paralegal, Dianne Hellard, who has worked in law for a number of years.

Emma is a Law Society accredited family law specialist and among her first cases since joining DFA Law has been a pro bono case that came into DFA Law from a charity looking after the needs of Afghan refugees in Northampton. The case revolves around a young family.

Rachel Adams said:

“When we heard about the plight of this family we just wanted to do something to help, so we agreed to work pro bono on their behalf. The children need legal help and it feels the right thing to do. It’s not something we can do, as a practice, on a frequent basis but sometimes there are more important things than fees.

“If every law firm could take just one case like this, we would all be able to assist so many more people in desperate need of help.”

DFA Law’s team offer advice and support on all aspects of Family Law, providing a first-class service that is tailored to the needs of each client, with a focus on resolving matters by taking a robust and straightforward approach when required but aiming for the least protracted solution
wherever possible.

Paula, Kelly and Emma are all members of Resolution, an organisation of lawyers and other family justice professionals that believes the process of separating, sorting out finances and child care can and should be done in a way that minimises conflict and keeps the best interests of any children at the heart.

The team follows the Resolution code of practice that promotes a sensitive and non-confrontational approach to family difficulties, combined with strength and depth of knowledge to ensure clients get unrivalled legal advice in the following areas of law:

Divorce and Dissolution of Civil Partnerships

Financials aspects of divorce or separation (as well as a specialist focus on high net worth cases)

Children

Cohabiting couples

Pre-nuptial and post-nuptial agreements

Mediation

Rachel Adams is ranked as a Tier 1 lawyer in Chambers and Partners, an independent research guide delivering detailed rankings and insight into the world’s leading lawyers, helping individuals and organisations make informed decisions when selecting legal services. Rachel is the only lawyer to be ranked as a Tier 1 lawyer in ‘Northampton and Surrounds’ which is a testament to the service, advice and reputation that Rachel and the team at DFA Law have.

The guide entry reads:

“Rachel Adams leads the family team at DFA Law in Northampton. She predominantly handles matrimonial finance work, including the negotiation of high net worth divorce settlements and nuptial agreements. Followed by the following testimonials:

“Rachel listens well, anticipates potential issues and provides pragmatic courses of action, taking further advice where necessary.”

“She is just brilliant – astute, intelligent and hard-working.”

“Rachel is incredibly conscientious, caring and thoughtful – she’s all over the details and is somebody who thinks deeply about the cases she is instructed on.”

Rachel said:

“As a team we know how important it is to be compassionate and understanding at what can be an extremely difficult time. The emotional toll and pressure that separating parties can feel is enormous and we strive to alleviate this stress by supporting our clients with direct and straightforward advice coupled with the best possible personal service.”
