Episode 19 | Rugby legend Steve Thompson MBE

June 22, 2022

Rugby legend Steve Thompson

Northampton and England rugby legend Steve Thompson joins Ben Thomas, Managing Director of All Things business to talk about his story, what Northamptonshire means to him and what life is like now.

Following his book release, Steve Thompson sits down with Ben Thomas for a hard-hitting and honest conversation. He talks to Ben about what Northampton means to him as his ‘safety’ place as well as anecdotes of his early years living in Northampton. He explains what it’s like looking back on his world cup experience given his severe memory loss of that time in his life.

Steve also describes the moment he found out about his brain injury after test delays throughout COVID including the shocking revelation when his doctor likened his brain scans to those of a deceased person. He also talks about his relationship with his neuropsychiatrist Dr Gavid Newby who guided Steve through times of low mental health and suicidal feelings to help him learn coping mechanisms to deal with his constant health battle.

Steve talks us through his average day since his diagnosis, including the methods he uses to best manage his prognosis. Ben and Steve discuss the alignment between professional sport and business, and how his partnership with Medigold Health care is testament to this.

To close, Steve recounts the struggles he faced when recording the audio version of his new book, and how this made him feel
