Episode 34 | Don’t Take Life For Granted

Local entrepreneur Parm Bhangal joins Ben and Frazer this week as they discuss business, work-life balance and Parm’s career history.

Parm runs seven businesses and is widely known throughout the local business community. He outlines his career history, beginning as a quality surveyor before a bad experience with a boss led him to leave and start his own business at age 22: Bhangals Construction Consultants.

Since then, his business empire has only created new businesses that encompass real estate and property management, architecture and design, as well as the American diner themed Wing Kingz restaurant.

Learning Business

Parm discusses how his process of learning business and life has largely come from experience, adapting and overcoming. He’s also used his experiences to begin a coaching business, which teaches aspiring entrepreneurs business principles as well as more sector-specific construction and property knowledge.

Ben asks about Wing Kingz, it being markedly different from Parm’s other ventures. It’s Parm’s only B2C operation, so Ben asks about the difference between operating B2B and B2C businesses. Parm believes that the operational aspect of B2B is easier, as others are more understanding of challenges as business owners themselves. However, marketing a B2C is much easier, as you are much freer to brand the business in more interesting ways and achieve virality.

Work-Life Balance

The conversation turns to work-life balance, which Parm has struggled with. He recounts that he collapsed from stress seven years ago, having been working himself to the bone across three businesses and taking on too many duties himself. It took this shock for him to realise that something needed to change.

Now he prioritises time with his children and family far more. Ben shares his own qualms about missing some of his own kid’s lives due to doing business, but that he too thinks he’s found a better balance, even if it is difficult to maintain, and he thinks he’s a better dad now.
