Meetings and transactions were put on hold for a while, but there was still some serious business to be done at the first All Things Business golf day in June.
Almost 100 golfers from 24 teams competed for The Big Tee Off trophy at Overstone Park Resort, enjoying some keen competition and at the same time raising money for We Mind & Kelly Matters, a charity that aims to raise awareness of mental health issues.
Former professional footballers Neil ‘Razor’ Ruddock and Alan Kennedy joined teams from businesses across the country, not only for the overall first prize but to be in with a chance of winning a range of prizes for longest drives and nearest the pins.
The traditional bacon sandwiches saw the golfers on their way, followed by a barbecue and prize giving in the Overstone club house at the end of the day.
The first team from HE Simm, comprising Perry Nimmo, Daniel O’Reilly, Josh Gray and Daniel Richards, took the inaugural Big Tee Off trophy. They finished just a point ahead of Technical Foam Services in second place, with ACS Recruitment in third. The HE Simm second team came home in fourth place to complete a successful day for the engineering services firm.
We Mind & Kelly Matters was set up by John Hewitt and his family after his daughter Kelly took her own life aged just 24 in 2018 after a long struggle with mental health issues. The aim is to raise awareness that many people around us, from family and friends to work colleagues, often suffer in silence, and how being able to recognise the warning signs and knowing what approach to take are so important in suicide prevention.
Hosted by Razor Ruddock, the raffle and charity auction at the end of the presentations – including the sale of signed sports memorabilia – added to the final fundraising total, which will be announced soon.
