Offering so much more than just a temporary solution

There’s so much more to temporary workers than an emergency stop-gap and The ONE Group in Northampton has recently been working on a campaign to help both employers and candidates appreciate the benefits they can bring.

What the agency, which specialises in office, accountancy and finance, HR, IT and marketing recruitment, is keen to get across is that temps can fill vacancies across the entire spectrum of roles, from a few days’ cover on a busy reception desk to an experienced finance director stepping in to cover a period of absence.

Anne Williams, Senior Business Manager, Accountancy and Finance, specialises in temporary placements and has been at the forefront of the campaign. She said: “Temp recruitment is often pigeonholed, but it shouldn’t be. There are a number of very good reasons why people might want temporary roles, candidates who are very experienced but who want flexibility, or who aren’t sure they want to commit to long-term, and they can be the perfect solution for businesses wanting short-term cover or a ‘try before you buy’ type approach.

“We think of temps covering busy times in the logistics sector, or covering absence in admin roles, but there really is potential to fill every role. Imagine you’ve got a finance director going on maternity leave. You could pass that work on to a more junior member of the team, in which case you’d probably be tempted to look over their shoulder all the time, just for peace of mind. Or you could put an experienced person in place, someone who has a wide knowledge of different systems and processes, who can slot in well and pick up the reins from day one.”

Briefly, the key benefits of temporary positions are:

There is no commitment or additional cost other than paying the charge rate which covers all employment costs for as long as you
need them.

The recruitment agency will have done all the checks and due diligence to find the candidate with the skills to meet your needs.

Seeing how a temporary worker does, the skills they bring and how they fit in with the culture is a good way to potentially turn that interim role into a permanent one.

Professional temps are committed to seeing the role through to successful completion, for as long as it takes, because their reputation depends upon it.

Anne Williams added: “A lot of companies may feel they can’t commit to recruiting additional staff at the moment, they’re maybe just recovering from the pandemic and now facing economic challenges. A temporary worker can well be the answer, with the option to possibly make that position permanent should the circumstances be right and both parties are happy to continue.

“We launched this campaign because we wanted to remind businesses that there are a lot of positives from taking on temporary workers, and more options out there than you might think. As part of it, we have introduced a Temp of the Month award and the first one went to a lab technician – not the kind of role you associate with temporary workers. And it was voted for by the client, not the consultants.

“What the award does is give a shout out to those that are successfully stepping into temporary roles and acknowledges how that’s appreciated by their employers and the people they work with.

“As an agency, we work hard to build good relationships and trust with our clients and candidates, and felt like that needed an additional boost to show the possibilities and benefits of temporary staff.”
