The poor people skills of managers in some of the county’s businesses are leaving employees demotivated, stressed, and disengaged – and it’s costing companies thousands of pounds.
That’s because all these factors lead to a loss of productivity and an increased employee turnover. What’s more, these managers are causing business owners additional stress and frustration, too.
Rachel Collar owns and runs Haus of HR in Towcester. She said:
“We’ve all experienced working for a bad manager at some point. It’s easy to see how they can have such a dramatic impact on a business.
“What’s important is that as soon as you notice problematic behaviour from a manager, you tackle the issue to stop it becoming a company-wide issue.
“Not only do bad managers have a negative impact on their team, but they can also actively stop you from developing future managers in the right way, which leads to longer term problems.”
Rachel recommends additional training and development for managers lacking the right skills. She said:
“A great manager should lead a team by example. That means they should listen to what their people are telling them, they should understand what drives both the team and the individuals, and they should recognise a job well done.
“Great managers know that it takes a team to hit goals and be successful. It’s not solely down to them, which is the attitude we see a lot. It’s also crucial to maintain an excellent level of communication within teams. That’s so everyone understands what they’re doing, and the common goal that they’re working towards.
“Too many managers either fail to communicate properly or communicate too much which can become confusing and distracting.
“Tackling problematic behaviour quickly can make it easier to correct bad traits and shows your employees that you take their happiness seriously, not to mention saving your business the time and expense of rehiring managers, or the employees they’ve driven out of the company.”
Haus of HR was formed in 2021 and outsources a full range of HR services to local businesses, as well as a number of learning and development courses.
