Keeping it in the Family to Ensure Stability and Success

Proud of what it has achieved over 17 years, The Qube is also not afraid to look to the future of the family-run business, and recent internal changes will ensure the first and second generations are perfectly placed to take the company forward together.

Keeping it in the family to ensure stability and successMick Spittle founded the modular building company in 2007, specialising in structural insulated panel (SIPS) construction projects for the garden room marketplace before moving into the education sector. In those early days, Jordan Spittle was still at school but regularly made an appearance on-site, helping out, even if it was just making the tea or shifting timber for the lads.

Now, after almost six years working side by side, Mick and Jordan have instigated an internal reorganisation that sees Jordan take over as Managing Director and Mick move to the role of Chairman. The two will continue to work closely together on the day-to-day business.

Mick said:

“It’s not about me stepping aside, I’m still going to be very much involved but it makes sense that the roles shift at this stage so that we are ready to push forward into the future. We are a family business, and we want to be here not just in five years’ time but in 25 years’ time, so it’s important to plan.

“For the team here at The Qube and for anyone outside the company, we’re just making sure everyone’s on the same page. Jordan did work experience here when he was at university but after that he went away and got experience elsewhere, in F1 and sport sponsorship, and thanks to that he’s brought new ideas and skills to the business, particularly on the business development side, helping us grow and diversify into new marketplaces.

“We’re proud to be a wholly family-run company, and this is the right move at this time, and we’ll continue to work side by side to grow and develop our business.”

Keeping it in the family to ensure stability and successThe Qube designs and builds bespoke modular structures to clients’ exact requirements, taking on the entire project, from handling planning submissions and ensuring compliance with building regulations, construction and groundworks including foundations, drainage and utilities.

Constructed from sustainable materials using Modern Methods of Construction, the modular structures act like building blocks, offering the client freedom to create whatever they need, from extra classrooms or an office, to onsite gym with changing rooms or additional meeting rooms.

As well as the education sector, The Qube also works within residential, leisure, sports and commercial markets, offers additional ranges such as Tiny Homes – chassis-built homes that offer alternative living and holiday accommodation – and provides cabins for Go Ape outdoor adventure centres.

The Qube is also committed to continuing its involvement in the local community, where it supports a number of charities and sports clubs. Over the years the company has been involved with Northampton School for Boys’ first XV rugby team, and Old Northamptonians football, cricket and rugby teams. It also supports Cynthia Spencer Hospice and the McCarthy-Dixon Foundation and has sponsored the Overall School of the Year award at the Northamptonshire Education Awards since the inaugural event in 2019.

Jordan Spittle said:

“For me, it’s a very proud moment to become Managing Director. I was involved with the business when I was still at school and have worked across a few different roles throughout the last six years and it means a lot to me that I have gained Mick’s trust and he is happy for me to lead the team moving forward.

“It shows that we have a plan for the years to come. We have diversified and added new products and services over the last two or three years, but our key focus area is still building high-quality, sustainable buildings on-site with SIPS and we have no plans to change that business model.

“But we have grown the team over the last few months and that growth will be critical to the success of our exciting plans to be more aggressive in pushing for larger, more complex contracts.

“We are a family-run business, and it feels like natural progression that the second generation will be part of taking us into the future, and who knows, maybe a third generation in 20 or 30 years’ time?”
