Sometimes, the simple solutions are the best

Working to a client’s brief, but adding years of experience and expertise, means Simply Workspace can deliver savings not only in terms of cost and time, but also in terms of waste and environmental impact.

Simply Workspace operates mainly in the office, education, health and care home sectors to transform wasted or uninspiring space into well-designed, practical working environments. The team, led by Jon Bautista, offers all aspects of space planning in new spaces, or reconfiguring and refurbishing to make best use of what’s already available. Their vision can often mean a client avoiding a costly move or extension project simply by seeing new and different opportunities for using the space they already have.

In addition, Simply Workspace goes to great lengths to recycle and repurpose wherever possible, including furniture, storage units and flooring,

“We’ve done projects in the past where a client is considering moving to bigger premises, or building a costly extension, and we’ve shown them how, by carefully configuring the space, they can avoid all that cost,” said Jon.

“By having an eye for what will work, and then creating 2D and 3D plans for how it could look, we can often negate the need to move or extend.

“So, as well as saving money, they’re also avoiding the materials and carbon footprint of moving or embarking on a building project.”

A year ago, Jon started Simply Techspace, with a former industry colleague Matt Dann, to bring another dimension to its service offering.

Simply Workspace can deliver a whole range of commercial furniture from chairs and desks to board room furniture and accessories, flooring, lighting and windows; Simply Techspace is a full-service IT business, providing hardware, software, cabling, telecommunications, IT support and cyber security.

Clients working with Simply Workspace to fit out new premises, or refurbish existing ones, can build in all the tech aspects such as telecoms, equipment and cabling at the same time and with one point of contact.

“Simply Techspace has been a success story for us to date,” said Jon. “Even though we launched at what turned out to be a bit of a recession around a year ago, we never regretted taking that step, and it’s working out well. We live in a world where technology will always be a major part of an organisation’s set-up, and for a client looking at updating their space or moving to new premises, getting the technology set up is part and parcel of the project. Being able to organise everything through us takes a lot of the headache out of the process.”

Having seen turnover reach £1.6m in the first year of the partner- ship, and forecasts suggesting that will more than double over the next 12 months, the business is experiencing healthy growth. The team has increased to 16 and another 10 to 12 are expected to join within the next year.

Clients range in size from large organisations to small, independent businesses, and from the start, the Simply Workspace-Simply Techspace approach has been built around supporting local businesses and so, in turn, the local economy.

Jon and Matt’s ethos is to be an open business that isn’t driven by KPIs or placing unnecessary demands on their teams, and to create an environment where people enjoy being at work.

The structure of the company is built around ‘pillars’ of expertise, individuals who understand and can help to build the business, while at the same time helping others gain the knowledge and experience they need. Jon said:

“Although we’re growing, we’re still a relatively small business and that means we can mould and adapt what we need to do to give our clients the best service. There aren’t numerous levels of decision makers, we can discuss projects as a team and come up with a solution that works, quickly.

“Because we’re not tied to targets and product lines, we can be flexible on our product offering, given our access to the whole of market, including pricing structures. Our approach is that while we might be working today with a small or start-up business that is looking for support, that company might well grow to be one of our biggest clients in ten years’ time.

“By working collaboratively now and making sure they achieve what they want to achieve, we’re building a relationship everyone benefits from in the long term. Our aim is to partner with the business community, not compete with it. Business can be difficult and where we can support our clients, we will.”
