Painters step in to transform charity’s outdoor living area

YMCA Northamptonshire relies on the support of members of the local community, and the renovation of its Derngate premises was no different.

Martin Sellick and his team at MPS Painting Contractors generously donated their time to refurbish the outer walls of the garden. Their time, effort and skill is not only appreciated by the charity as a whole, but by the current and future residents of Derngate.

The charity opened its Derngate accommodation to 13 young people that are care experienced in September last year, providing them with a place to stay and somewhere that will holistically support their varying needs at a crucial time in their personal development as well as their growing independence. Derngate provides practical, emotional and employment support so residents can go on to live happy, healthy and independent lives.

The work carried out by the volunteers from MPS Painting Contractors has transformed the outdoor living area.

Fundraising Manager Lorraine Devereux said:

“We are so grateful to Martin and the team for their support, donating time and materials. The wall was in quite a poor state so their help and expertise over the course of a few days has helped complete the transformation of the garden area for residents to enjoy.”

Martin understands how young people require support when transitioning from the care system to adulthood, recognising how the right environment can help young people achieve their goals and aspirations. He didn’t grow up in the area, but has built his business here and feels that ‘giving back’ is an essential part of community.

He said: “I lost my father when I was quite young and struggled at the time. I was homeless for a year and lost my way a bit, and it was hard. There was no real support available and I had to rely on family and friends to get me back on my feet, so I’m a firm believer in doing everything we can for younger people in difficult circumstances to help them get a start and build a future in society.”

This year, the YMCA has been chosen as one of the charities in the Franklins £50 Challenge, where Franklins Solicitors give businesses or organisations £50 seed funding and they have to use that money to generate as much revenue as possible in a three-month period.

The theme for this year’s challenge is ‘Hope and Help for Every Generation’.
