Event showcases the benefits of degree apprenticeships

Employers can discover the benefits degree apprenticeships can bring them at a free event this month at University of Northampton (UON).

Employers Connect – the university’s second such event and to be held at the start of National Apprenticeships Week – will link employers with UON apprenticeship lecturers on Monday February 9 from 9.30am to 12pm at Waterside Campus.

Guests will hear from those in the know, the programme leads and other teaching staff who deliver the university’s 14 degree apprenticeship programmes. They will detail the business value of degree apprenticeships, for businesses and staff.

Degree apprenticeships blend quality, class-based learning at the university with practical work experience through the apprentice’s existing employer, offering an ‘earn while you learn’ study option toward a full degree.

They address skills gaps, reduce youth unemployment and develop the career prospects of employees. As the cost of the course is covered by the Apprenticeship Levy – a’pot’ that many employers and universities can access – there are also no tuition fees.

These apprenticeships can also increase business revenue and productivity and drive regional and national economic growth. In the UK, the estimated yearly gain for employers is between E2,500 and £18,000 per apprentice during their training period.

Simon Longhurst, ON’s Apprenticeships Manager, said: “Last year’s Employers Connect event saw more than 40 employers visit campus to find out first-hand what a Degree Apprenticeship could to enhance their organisation.

“Degree apprenticeships bring many benefits for employers, their workforce and, in turn, for wider society and the economy.

Our teams are again looking forward to talk with you about this and help you take the first step toward supporting your own degree apprentice.”
