Milton Keynes College Group has been awarded Digital and Technologies Technical Excellence College (TEC) status under the government’s new Wave 2 programme — a direct mandate to place Further Education at the heart of the country’s digital future.
The College Group will work with FESA (Further Education and Skills Alliance, a group of FE colleges across the Oxford- Cambridge Growth Corridor) and other key stakeholders to lead on building capacity with partner colleges through shared curriculum, professional development, digital infrastructure and employer engagement, therefore supporting national objectives to grow digital capability.
The TEC award builds on the foundations set by the South Midlands Local Skills Improvement Plan, which identified digital as one of the region’s priority sectors and highlighted the growing demand for AI literacy, data skills, and digital capability across the wider economy.
As one of 19 TECs across the country announced in Wave 2, the College Group is uniquely positioned to translate the government’s national ambition into regional action. By working closely with educational partners, key employers and stakeholders, the College Group will drive curriculum reform and strengthen employer co-design approaches whilst building clear progression pathways into skilled digital careers.
The government’s Minister for Skills, Baroness Jacqui Smith, visited the College Group’s Bletchley campus to make the announcement. Baroness Smith spoke to staff and students and saw first-hand the excellent facilities, teaching and experiences available to students. Skills Minister Jacqui Smith said: “This investment in new Technical Excellence Colleges will give learners across England access to world-class training and a clear route into well-paid, rewarding careers. And because the best colleges will share their expertise with others, the whole country benefits.
“This is skills investment that works for learners, for employers, and for the regions driving growth across the country. They’ll deliver local jobs for local people, as well as growth for the whole of the country.”
