Bedford School is proud to announce Michael Sloan as its new Head Master, following James Hodgson’s exceptional 12-year tenure.
Mr Sloan will join Bedford School at the start of the next academic year, following a highly competitive recruitment process that drew interest from many of the UK’s leading schools. Currently Headmaster at King’s College, Taunton, he brings strong academic leadership with valuable experience in leading boarding, ensuring outstanding pastoral care in an enriching all-boys environment.
A graduate of Newcastle University in Ancient History, Mr Sloan began his career as an Officer in the British Army, serving in Iraq, Afghanistan and Kosovo. After completing his PGCE at Bristol University, he moved into education, teaching history at Emanuel School in London before joining the leadership team at Brighton College where he remained for eight years as Deputy Head playing a key role in elevating the school’s academic profile. In 2022, he became Head of King’s College, Taunton.
Bedford School’s Governors were particularly impressed by Mr Sloan’s ambition for every boy to fulfil his potential, his commitment to staff development and his understanding of the culture that makes Bedford such an outstanding school.
Talking about his appointment, Mr Sloan said, “I am thrilled to be appointed as the next Head Master of Bedford School. Mr Sloan will relocate to Bedford with his wife, Hannah, and their four young sons. He now looks forward to building on the school’s strong foundations and leading Bedford School into its next exciting chapter.
