Building a brighter future for children

Kip McGrath Education has been helping primary and secondary school age children to improve or extend their learning for over 45 years.

With the sole purpose of building a brighter future for children who were struggling with their education, Kip McGrath was founded in Maitland, New South Wales, in 1976 by Kip and Dugnea McGrath. That first tutoring centre in Australia has since grown into a global network with over 560 centres in 20 countries.

In 2004, the first Kip McGrath centre opened in Milton Keynes, building on the fundamental belief of Kip and Dugnea: that every child can learn when taught individually, based on their needs.

Although the core methods and approach to teaching remain the same, we have seen many developments in the way we deliver our lessons. Around 2010, our new internet-based teaching programme was released, which made updating the system and learning content a lot easier. The students also loved the new programme, as they each had their own login to access their planned lessons. Up to 2015, we only provided face-to-face, in-centre lessons, but the development of our own purpose-built tutoring platform opened the doors to online teaching. At the time we had no idea what an important role this ability would play in the future survival of the business. The ability to teach online meant we could provide uninterrupted lessons to our students when the Covid pandemic hit in 2020.

A few years on, and we now provide a blended model of in-centre and online lessons.

The learning journey

Our free assessment is designed to identify any gaps in the student’s learning and to also identify strengths. This can take anywhere from 40 to 60 minutes and is conducted by a fully qualified teacher. Following the assessment, parents talk directly to the teacher to discuss the results. The assessment results help us to create an individualised learning programme for each student to target exactly what they need help with.

The programme is carefully designed so that students progress at their own pace. They start on the Kip McGrath programme at the level suited to their current ability and knowledge. All our tutors are qualified teachers with school experience, enabling them to have a clear understanding of the diverse needs of children. A Kip session is a very positive learning experience and includes a combination of computer activities and written work to ensure students are kept motivated and engaged to learn. Our proven methods encourage independent learning, ensuring children develop skills for life, not just the next exam.

Student progress is monitored by carrying out termly assessments and regular feedback is given to parents.

At Kip McGrath we steadfastly believe that every child deserves the right to read, write and calculate well enough to choose their future. Kip and Dugnea’s passion and commitment to learning is an enduring legacy that impacts generations around the globe, and we are proud to be part of it.
