Expert guidance through the health and safety minefield

While health and safety regulations are there to protect everyone, it can be something of a minefield, and expert help and guidance is the most effective way to ensure compliance.

Consulo Health & Safety was set up last year to help clients across a range of sectors embed good health and safety practices. Headed up by Managing Director Craig Ablett, Consulo provides anything from consultancy on meeting current legislation and overseeing annual updates of accreditation and certification, right through to a complete project management service covering all aspects of health and safety.

In addition to consultancy, the NEBOSH qualified firm can carry out documentation creation and audits, including risk assessments and COSHH assessments; provide training information and arrange bespoke courses.

Working with trusted training partners, Consulo offers courses in manual handling training, risk assessment training, COSHH assessment training and sharps awareness training. Key industry sectors covered include education, manufacturing, construction (including asbestos), mechanical and engineering, warehousing, transport and general office environments.

Guidance through the health and safety minefield - All Things Business

Craig said:

“Health and safety is not about box ticking and meeting legal standards. Companies need to make absolutely sure that their employees have all the certification they need, and also that they have the best, most up-to-date training available and that they put it into practice in the workplace.

“Training needs have changed over the past year and online courses are more popular, often out of necessity. We’ve been able to adapt to that to stay on top of our clients training needs and continue to deliver effective, high-quality courses remotely to keep businesses running smoothly.”

The online courses available from Consulo Health & Safety include:

Abrasive Wheels

This course is aimed at anyone who uses abrasive wheels or employs people who use abrasive wheels as part of their work. It covers different types of abrasive wheel, safety in their use and how to identify the type of wheel. The course is approved by IIRSM and CPD.

DSE Training

This course is aimed at companies who employ users of display screen equipment, or DSE as it’s often called, and is intended to be completed by those who will be assessing the DSE set ups of employees. DSE is a term that covers a wide range of equipment, which if not set up correctly, leaves users at increased risk from certain disorders. The course covers setting up a work space to minimise the chances of the user developing musculoskeletal problems associated with poor posture, and is approved by IIRSM.

Food Hygiene Level 1 (up to Level 5 available)

Food safety combines a number of practices to reduce health hazards. These include premises hygiene, personal hygiene, risk control, pest control and waste management. This Level 1 course is about minimising the level of potential hazards in a food catering setting. The courses are approved by CPD.

CDM Awareness

This awareness course covers the core concepts of the regulations and details the various roles that are required for a construction design and management project along with the key documents that need to be produced. It is aimed at any key duty holder including contractors, sub-contractors and designers, and starts with an introduction to CDM, then covers some of the parameters that need to be checked when a project is being planned. It finishes by detailing a number of example projects that illustrate how the regulations can be applied. This course is approved by IIRSM.

“Our aim is to make sure our clients achieve best health and safety practice without it becoming a burden,”

said Craig.

“We believe getting to that point shouldn’t get in the way of your business goals in terms of time or financially. By working together, we help clients reduce their insurance payments, lower accident rates in their workplace and cut days lost due to sickness or injury. Staff morale is boosted by everyone feeling safe and comfortable with the way the business is run, so good health and safety practice becomes a tool for increasing revenue and profitability.

“We’re trying to bring about behavioural change and a cultural change where everyone, throughout the business, understands what is required and why and is invested in working towards a safe environment.”
