Creating extra space for the education sector

The solid foundations of education remain the same, but as intakes fluctuate, extra-curricular activities grow and modern teaching methods demand more space, there’s a need for utmost flexibility.

Modular buildings specialist The Qube, creates bespoke modular buildings for nurseries, schools, colleges and universities across the UK. Among the most important factors are ease of assembly, which reduces disruption on site, as well as sustainability and longevity. Furthermore, the buildings can be easily adapted to a variety of purposes and uses throughout the education sector.

The Qube’s clients have the freedom to design a building to their exacting requirements, with the help of in-house designers, and in the style of their choice. From there, the Northampton-based construction experts take on the entire project, from handling planning submissions and ensuring compliance with building regulations. Off-site construction means time on site is kept to a minimum, with The Qube team ensuring drainage, utilities and foundations are in place for the new building to be installed quickly and efficiently.

The Qube has recently undertaken a new junior teaching block at Hall School in Wimbledon, part of Chatsworth Schools, where government safety measures led to a demand for a new classroom facility. Space was tight on site and access constricted but The Qube designed a building that met all the client criteria, resulting in a brand-new four-classroom block in an area of unused playground.

Jonathan Richie, Head of Operations at Chatsworth Schools, said:

“The Qube were a pleasure to work with. All of our client queries were responded to in full and in a timely manner. When on site, the project was delivered within a 12-week timeframe, with no fuss – it was slick, safe and seamless.”

Other recent projects include:

  • Canvey Island Infant School, where a new nursery facility was required within an existing primary school site. The Qube designed and built a solution to site the building on an area of unused playground, not only creating more space, but allowing play areas adjacent to it.
  • On-Track Education, Northampton – tough ground conditions meant The Qube team had to be innovative with the designs of foundations. There was a big fall in the ground as well as tree roots to protect, so the building was installed using a ground screw foundation system.
  • Draycott Moor College, Stoke-on-Trent – this was the first part of a two-phase project. Phase 1 was to extend the school reception area and to create one extra classroom.

Jordan Spittle, Associate Director of The Qube, said:

“The modular buildings produced today, using Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) are a world away from the temporary, makeshift classrooms a lot of people imagine.

“These modern buildings, constructed from sustainable materials, are a hassle-free way to create areas such as classrooms, offices, gyms, changing rooms and meeting rooms in a huge range of contemporary and customised options and finishes. The buildings’ clean lines act like building blocks, giving customers the freedom to build to suit their exact requirements, with speed of build a major advantage when compared to conventional building methods.

“Our aim is to raise the profile of the MMC sector because we know that as attitudes change, and people see what is possible when utilising MMC, demand will rise and there will be fantastic opportunities across various sectors all over the country.”
