How we can take men’s health more seriously

One in five men in the UK will die before the age of 65.

It’s a shocking statistic but one that could well benefit from employers working to change men’s attitudes towards talking about their own health and taking health issues seriously.

Occupational health and wellbeing provider Medigold Health is planning a webinar to mark Men’s Health Month in November. The webinar, entitled ‘Changing The Narrative On Men’s Health – How Employers Can Make The Difference’ will explore how we can break down the barriers that typically prevent men from engaging with their health.

In what promised to be an informative and inspiring sessions, Medigold Health’s Chief Nursing Officer Nicky Piper and OH Physician Dr John Colvin will be discussing the issue and looking at the crucial role employers can play in spreading awareness of health issues among working-age men.

They will also be speaking to the company’s Health Awareness Campaigner, former England rugby star Steve Thompson MBE. Steve retired from professional rugby in 2011 and has since been diagnosed with early onset dementia, potentially caused by head injuries he suffered during his playing days.He now speaks openly about how, at the age of just 43, he’s had to learn to cope with the personal health struggles as the result of his condition. Working with Medigold Health, and with the publication of his autobiography, Unforgettable, earlier this year, he hopes to inspire other dealing with challenges in life.

During the webinar, the panel will explore

  • The main factors contributing to men’s poor health outcomes
  • The top health issues facing men, including warning signs and symptoms and how to reduce the risks
  • Why we need to focus more on men’s mental health and how to open up the conversation on this vital topic, plus tips on how to look after yourself and others
  • The important role employers can play in changing the culture and attitudes around men’s health and educating working-age men on the health issues that disproportionately affect them.

Changing The Narrative On Men’s Health – How Employers Can Make The Difference is a free webinar which will stream via Zoom between midday and 1pm on Tuesday, November 29.
