As a general rule, office and workwear has become more casual in recent years. Therefore, it’s a tricky when knowing what to wear for a business awards dinner.
If you’re an organiser or an award sponsor, you’ll want to create a good impression. If you’re a finalist, bear in mind you might well be going up on stage in front of hundreds of people.
A business awards ceremony will be a good networking opportunity, regardless of your reason for being there. You will likely be on social media, so it is important to make a good, professional impression too. For that reason, it is best to lean towards formal or business attire.

Formal dress for a business awards dinner
Formal dress is still common for business awards dinners. Usually, there is a guide on the invitation or ticket. Most will state whether it is black tie. This generally means a dinner jacket and bow-tie for the men and cocktail or maxi dresses for the women.
If black tie isn’t suggested, then what might be considered formal business attire will be appropriate:
Men: a well-tailored dark suit is ideal, combined with a light-coloured shirt and a formal tie.
Women: a knee-length, midi, or full-length stylish dress in one colour or an understated pattern, or a suit (trousers or skirt) can work well depending on the occasion. Choose heels if you prefer, but elegant flat shoes or sandals work just as well. Understated and elegant jewellery works well, combined with a classic small handbag or clutch.
As a rule, it’s always better to be slightly overdressed than underdressed for a business awards event. Being well-dressed and well-groomed conveys a professional air. At the same time, it may be a long evening with lots of time standing, so choose clothes and shoes that fit well and that you feel comfortable in.
You want to display confidence and competence while blending in with the formal tone of the event.
