Milton Keynes City Council has long shared its ambition of making Milton Keynes the greenest city in the world, and it looks like we’re on track to get there.
The City Council is currently implementing various green initiatives, including building energy efficient council homes, installing LED street lighting, and exploring the possibility of generating renewable energy through a solar farm.
These efforts, coupled with future strategies, means that we’re on the way to reach carbon neutrality by 2030. We have cut our own carbon emissions by tens of thousands of tonnes in the last four years, and this is set to improve even more.
Some key eco-conscious projects as part of this work include:
- LED Street Lighting – since 2014, the City Council has upgraded almost 40,000 streetlights, leading to a total saving of 29.2 million kWh of electricity and over 38,000 total tonnes of carbon. We will upgrade the remaining lights by Spring 2024.
- Green Homes – we’re planning to deliver energy efficiency measures to more than 1,900 council homes as part of our housing and maintenance programme.
- Solar Farm – we’re currently exploring renewable energy generation options, which could include a large-scale solar farm in the city.
We’re committed to making sure that every person and business in Milton Keynes can play a part in tackling the climate crisis. Whether it be using public transport more often, or reducing waste, there are lots of small steps you can take to help us become a world-leading sustainable city.
Throughout the cost-of-living crisis, people are also being helped with cutting their energy usage and costs. Last year, we funded a ‘Warmth and Wellbeing’ helpline which hundreds of people have called since it launched in November. Callers have received advice by an expert team on debt and bills, saving energy, and how to apply for grants to make a home better insulated and more energy efficient.
