When Richard Harper first attended the annual Ride High Charity Ball over five years ago, he could never have imagined how involved he would become in the charity’s mission to transform the lives of vulnerable and disadvantaged children in Milton Keynes.
In 2021, a few years after learning about Ride High, a friend encouraged Richard to sign up to the charity’s Cycle Challenge. Having only just returned to cycling after a 40-year break it was a large undertaking, but he knew his efforts would make an important difference to young lives. Initially, Richard signed up to take on the 50-mile route, but his training went so well he decided to push himself and take on the 100-mile route.
During a training ride, Richard visited the Equestrian Centre in Loughton, home to the Ride High charity. There, he discovered the safe and tranquil environment hidden in the heart of Milton Keynes that supports children to grow in confidence and resilience and promote positive health and wellbeing.
When he crossed the finish line of his 100-mile challenge a few weeks later he couldn’t have been more proud. He’d reignited his passion for cycling and found a new purpose.
In 2023 Richard joined Ride High’s Board of Trustees where he not only helps guide the charity’s strategy but also chairs its fundraising sub-committee working to ensure vital funds are raised so the charity can continue its life-changing work.

“I am incredibly humbled by the work Ride High does in transforming the lives of local children,” said Richard. “At every board meeting, we hear a case study from one of the children we’ve supported. I’m often holding back tears as I listen to their stories and see the difference we’ve made. Ride High does fantastic work in the local community, and I am proud to help their cause.”
With over 40 years’ experience in the fast-moving consumer goods and food manufacturing sectors, Richard brings valuable professional insight to the board. Having worked in Milton Keynes for over 30 years his commitment to giving back to the local community is another reason for supporting Ride High. Outside of work and his trustee responsibilities, Richard is a keen sports fan and in recent years has fully embraced road cycling as a passion, helping to improve his fitness and wellbeing.
This year, Richard is preparing to tackle another 100-mile challenge at the charity’s upcoming Ride MK Cycling Festival.
He’s calling on others to join him on Sunday June 29 at Furzton Lake for a day of fun, fitness and fundraising. Participants can take on one of the four routes designed for all ages and abilities – 100 and 50 miles road routes, a 20-mile redway-only route and 1.6 mile Ready-Set-Go route for children. There is the option to cycle individually, in a team or to join a guided group.
Every mile cycled will help transform the lives of vulnerable and disadvantaged children in the community.
