An award-winning Northampton restaurant supported British Curry Day by offering half-price chicken tikka masala and donating all proceeds to charity.
Saffron, in Castilian Street, took part in the nationwide promotion on Wednesday, December 1, with the Mayor of Northampton’s charity set to benefit from the money raised.
This year’s British Curry Day campaign celebrated the history of British curry and its wide-reaching influence on society.
Saffron owner, Naz Islam, said: “British curry has a proud history, it has become a cuisine in its own right – taking the flavours of our homeland and adding a modern twist to create a unique flavour that is revered the world over.
“Britain now exports curry to India and it’s down to our forefathers, the true curry pioneers. British Curry Day is a tribute to them.”
Proceeds from the event will go to Northampton Domestic Abuse Service.
Enam Ali, the brainchild behind British Curry Day, said: “The day commemorates the early ‘curry pioneers’, who came to Britain in the 1960s and 70s and created the unique fusion that is the great British curry.
“Tragically, we have lost many of the country’s first curry restaurateurs, elderly with underlying health issues, to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“These people came to a strange foreign land at the invitation of the British Government. Through their own endeavours and willingness to work long, anti-social hours and build a special industry, which is now an integral part of British society. We salute them.”
