Wasting no time in growing the business

Logistics, News | April 1, 2021

Investment of close to £1m over the past 18 months has seen a clear statement of intent how JNL Waste Services Ltd plans to grow and develop over the next few years.

Having established a firm footing in the waste logistics sector, providing contracted haulage and trade waste collections, JNL Waste Services has invested in new vehicles, an IT operating system, website, office space and personnel. With a modern fleet of vehicles, 20 drivers, four office personnel and a new Sales Manager set to join the company in April, founders Jon and Natalie Lee are excited about the future.

JNL Waste Services provides logistics for the collection and transfer of all types of waste materials and specialises in the food waste sector from its base in Chelveston near Higham Ferrers. The business operates three types of waste logistics: nationwide bulk waste transfer, contracted waste collection for food waste and recyclable goods, and a local trade waste and commercial food round collection.

Natalie said: “Our business is based on providing specialised waste logistics for the renewable energy sector such as food waste which is delivered to anaerobic digestion facilities – AD biogas plants – for the waste food to be used to produce methane gas and turned into electricity or gas and sold into the national grid. This side of the business has seen a strong growth year on year and is 50% of our business.”

New areas of growth within the business now include bulk waste transfer such as walking floor trailers and artic tipper trailers, with the introduction of three new vehicles and trailers used on the collection of local authorities’ domestic waste. This includes anything that requires collection from the local authorities’ yards and delivering to waste disposal facilities such as Energy from Waste (EFW) and Material Recycling Facialities (MRF) nationwide.

Over the past 12 months, as a result of the COVID pandemic the domestic waste sector has grown due to more people being at home and producing extra waste. The trade waste collections of commercial food waste, general and mixed recycling  from retail, hospitality, hospitals and care homes from Northamptonshire and surrounding counties has seen strong growth even in the recent uncertain times.

JNL Waste Services customers have various options of size of containers from small wheely bins, roll on-off skips and static bins, such as front end loader, for larger needs.

Jon said “As part of the investment programme, JNL Waste Services has invested in a new waste management software system, integrated with vehicle weighing solutions to provide calibrated and legal weighing of waste collections. The new system sees each vehicle equipped with a driver PDA tablet, providing the driver with the daily work schedules, details and information they will require. In turn, this is linked to the computers on the office to allow for live reporting and notifications. This is a major improvement to the driver’s daily work and also to the level of service to our customers. The system will integrate with our website allowing a web portal for customers to log in and retrieve live data and reports such as bin weights of collections and estimated collection times.”

The fleet of vehicles has recently seen the addition of two new food waste collection vehicles with bin weighing equipment, bin washing and drivers aids such as full 360 degree cameras. A third new vehicle, due to arrive this month, is currently being fitted with the bin weighing equipment for the purpose of trade waste general waste and mixed recycling FEL collections.

Natalie & Jon added: “We set up the business in 2014 and the first couple of years was about getting ourselves established and building a up a client base , recently we realised that the need to be stronger and push ourselves forward. We needed a website and to replenish the vehicles and the technology required to carry out customers’ requirements, to allow the business grow whilst providing exceptional service levels, which can sometimes be affected by a firm growing and not keeping up with invoicing and data reporting etc.

“Throughout our seven years we haven’t really had to market ourselves as our growth has mainly been down to word of mouth. Now, we believe time is right to push on and so we have taken on a Sales Manager for the first time to target certain areas and sectors who probably don’t know of JNL Waste Services and what we can offer to them.

“Our operational location is perfect to give superb service to our customers in Northamptonshire and surrounding counties, with the area’s major road links offering superb logistical links to anywhere in the UK.”
