The level of investment coming into Bedfordshire over the next five years is significant, driven in particular by the planned Universal Resort and the continued expansion of London Luton Airport.
And if there is one phrase I hear more than any other when speaking to businesses across the county, it’s this: ‘We want to be part of what’s coming next.’
Whether it’s major development projects, infrastructure investment or wider private sector growth, local firms are ambitious to play their part. The challenge is rarely appetite or capability. More often, it’s access: understanding where opportunities sit, who is buying, and how to position yourself to win the work.
That is exactly where the Chamber sits – squarely at the centre of the conversation.
Connecting opportunity with capability
Supply chains don’t build themselves. They rely on relationships, trust and clarity, and that is the space the Chamber occupies every day. Our role is to bring together those commissioning work and those capable of delivering it, creating a clear bridge between opportunity and action.
Across Bedfordshire, investment on this scale is creating demand not just for headline contractors, but for hundreds of local suppliers – including construction, logistics, manufacturing, professional services, hospitality, technology and far beyond. Our focus is simple and deliberate: ensuring local businesses are visible, informed and genuinely ready to compete, rather than watching opportunities pass them by.
We do this by working directly with developers, public sector bodies and anchor organisations to understand procurement pipelines early, and by translating that intelligence into clear, practical guidance for our members. Knowing what is coming is powerful. Knowing how to access it is transformational.
Our Supply Chain Working Group is central to this effort. It exists for one clear reason: to help Bedfordshire businesses secure work and to ensure that as much value as possible from incoming investment stays within the local economy.
Through the group, we share insight on procurement processes, expected standards, social value requirements and likely timelines. The focus is on making sure businesses are genuinely ‘tender ready’ and in the strongest possible position to secure contracts linked to major programmes of investment.
Just as importantly, the group opens up honest conversations about what buyers need, where flexibility exists, and how SMEs can MBM strengthen their offer.
This is not about one-off wins. It’s about building confidence and credibility so that local firms are successful repeatedly; not just once, but again and again as opportunities continue to flow.

Bedfordshire Chamber of Commerce
Local value matters
Keeping spend within the local economy is fundamental to sustainable growth. Strong local supply chains create jobs, develop skills, support apprenticeships and keep wealth circulating within our communities. That’s why we consistently champion the value of local suppliers with those commissioning work. Bedfordshire businesses are agile, accountable and invested in the long-term success of this region. When given fair access, they deliver.
At the same time, we are honest with businesses about the realities of procurement. Competition is real, standards are high, and preparation matters. Our role is to support firms to meet those expectations with confidence and not to be intimidated by them.
Collaboration over isolation
One of the most encouraging developments we’re seeing is increased collaboration. Through Chamber connections, businesses are forming partnerships, combining expertise and bidding together where scale or scope might otherwise be a barrier.
This collaborative mindset strengthens the entire supply chain. It allows Bedfordshire businesses to compete more effectively, while also building resilience, shared learning and long-term relationships across sectors.
Looking ahead
The scale of opportunity across Bedfordshire is significant, but opportunity alone is never enough. It has to be unlocked, understood and accessed.
The Chamber will continue to sit at the heart of that process – convening conversations, sharing intelligence, challenging barriers and opening doors. We are committed to ensuring local businesses are not on the sidelines of growth but firmly embedded within it.
My message to Bedfordshire firms is simple: engage early, stay connected and think strategically. The work is coming. Together, we will make sure local businesses are ready to take it on, and to thrive as a result.
