In any organisation, culture can be described quite simply as ‘the way we do things around here’. It is the combined behaviours of everyone who works within a community each day.
In a school, culture is the atmosphere in which everything takes place and it is therefore critical to success. Values sit at the centre of that culture.
The research evidence is clear: schools that are values-driven have high expectations and demonstrate academic, professional and social success. At Swanbourne, three values help define who we are as a school and guide everything that we do. Kindness. Curiosity. Effort.
These are three simple words, but they carry real meaning. They apply to everyone in the Swanbourne House community – from the youngest child to the most experienced teacher, and across every role within the school. They shape how we treat one another, how we approach learning and how we support each other in the daily life of the school. Around these values sits our ethos – how we intend to be as a community.
Developing character is fundamental. Positive virtues such as integrity, respect, resilience, empathy, humility and kindness guide children to live well and contribute meaningfully to the world around them. At Swanbourne House, these traits are taught, championed and celebrated from a child’s earliest days at the school.
In nurturing these qualities, we aim to develop well-educated and well-rounded young people who are ready for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences ahead.
Alongside this sits a love of learning. Children should be inspired by the joy of achievement and the celebration of every step taken on the path to success. A rigorous and stretching academic education must go hand in hand with outstanding character development. A vibrant curriculum that weaves together knowledge, skills and co-curricular opportunities helps cultivate intellectual curiosity and a lifelong love of learning.
Exploration and discovery are equally important. Education should be a continuous journey of curiosity, encouraging children to broaden their perspectives, expand their horizons and discover passions that will shape their futures.
Ambition and endeavour complete the picture. We aim high for every child and encourage them to do the same. With the support of outstanding teachers, children learn to persevere through challenges and experience the breakthrough moments that foster resilience, self-belief and a genuine sense of achievement.
When values and ethos come together in this way, they create something powerful: a culture that allows children to flourish. At Swanbourne House, it is a culture where kindness is celebrated, curiosity is encouraged and effort is recognised every day.
It is this culture that enables children not only to succeed academically, but to grow in confidence, develop strong character and leave Swanbourne House ready to make a positive difference in the world.
