A growing involvement in green roofs

There are times when the sustainable option doesn’t just look good in terms of carbon footprint and energy savings – but actually looks great in terms of the enhancing the building and the landscape around it.

Kingsley Roofing & Solar, a Northamptonshire company that is always ready to innovate and learn to deliver the results customers are looking for, has recently completed its first green roof.

Using a sedum-based system, the roof, on a home belonging a long-standing client of the company, provides not only an aesthetically pleasing look, but helps insulate the building and regulate internal temperatures, as well as providing a whole ecosystem that is good for the environment, improving air quality and attracting wildlife.

Paul Bone, Managing Director of Kingsley Roofing & Solar, ensured all necessary training was undertaken before the installation team started work on the first project of its kind for the company.

“Green roofs are becoming more popular as a sustainable option in the construction sector as they are a major plus point environmentally, and when it comes to getting planning permission,” said Paul.

“We’re always keen to get involved in new things and this client, whose business we’ve worked with on a number of projects, trusted us to deliver. We had to make sure everyone was trained to the highest standards, but now we’ve got that in place, we’re looking forward to doing a lot more green roofs in the future.”

Kingsley Roofing & Solar specialises in installing, replacing and maintaining roofing systems for a variety of commercial premises. The majority of the firm’s projects are roofs for commercial new builds and complete roof repairs, including lead work, flat roofs and pitched, and the team also offers fascia and guttering services.

The company is Microgeneration Certification Scheme accredited, so all work, whether on roofs or solar installations, comes with a warranty.

“A green roof a very different approach, but it gives great results and it’s a real benefit to the environment because the roof not only provides insulation and reduces energy use inside the building, but it helps purify the air and provides a home for wildlife,” said Paul.

“Another major advantage is that sedum is a low-growth plant, so it can be used in conjunction with solar panels – which is something we have been specialising in for some years now.

“It makes sense, if you’re having solar panels fitted, to use a company that specialises in roofing because then any issues with the roof can be addressed at the time of installation, leading to fewer problems further down the line.

“We saw that opportunity to combine the two a few years ago, and now we’re able to offer green roof installation as well – we’re always looking at where we can be innovative and what can be done to benefit clients.”
