What started as one man with a van, and then focused on responsiveness and reliability to grow into a courier service that has clients across the UK, was recognised at the county’s logistics sector’s biggest annual celebration.
HSP Couriers in Wellingborough, which was founded by Hiten Patel in 2008, was named Small Logistics Company of the Year at the Northamptonshire Logistics Awards in October.
The award was testament to Hiten’s vision when he launched a small business with big ideas. Ideas not only about how to deliver goods, but to deliver the kind of customer service and communication between driver and customer that makes all the difference in the world of express and same-day delivery.
Today, the company operates out of a site on the Park Farm Industrial Estate which includes warehousing and a comprehensive storage and pick-and-pack service that allows the business, and its customers, to remain agile and reactive. HSP Couriers has its own fleet of vehicles that carry out same-day and time-critical deliveries as well as bulk delivery and regular, planned deliveries on behalf of clients ranging from SMEs to blue-chip FTSE 100 companies.
The company achieved ISO 9001 accreditation earlier this year, is FORS registered and is a member of the Road Haulage Association. Its vans also make daily trips throughout the year to Ireland, and HSP Couriers is customs accredited to deliver to Northern and Southern Ireland, helping overcome some of the complexities of getting goods into the country post-Brexit and ensuring customers’ consignments reach their destination on time and with all the necessary preparation work completed.
As well as the team working out of the Wellingborough headquarters, HSP Couriers also has trusted contractors all over the UK that are called upon to react quickly and deliver an express service with the same values and dedication to service that Hiten expects.
Hiten said: “From the start, working as a delivery driver for some big logistics firms, I got to know the difference between good customer service and bad customer service.
“My aim was always to be both reactive and proactive, collecting and delivering something is the easy part, what makes the difference is the communication between the driver and the customer. A lot of our work in in medical, aerospace and engineering where, when an express delivery is needed, time really is crucial. It might be a business with a hundred people not able to carry on working because a part is needed, or a plane unable to take off until a component arrives. That’s costing businesses a lot of money and they need a service they can rely on.”
HSP Courier’s Small Logistics Company of the Year Award is an indication of how highly the firm is now regarded both locally and nationally. It expects its contractors to show the same commitment to customer service and reliability.
“It’s amazing to be recognised in these local awards, where some of the leading names in logistics are also there as finalists,” said Hiten. “We are humbled that we were put forward for such an award, even more so when we won.
“For me it’s all about reputation – we get customers from all over the country contacting us about deliveries because they know they can trust us. We’ve worked hard at showing how reliable and efficient we are, and it pays off because all anyone wants to know is that if their delivery company says it will do something, it will do it.”
