One week after Milton Keynes University Hospital officially opened its new Oak Wards, Milton Keynes Hospital Charity has launched a new Dementia Appeal to create calmer, more supportive hospital experiences.
The Dementia Appeal will fund improvements to the care, comfort and dignity of people living with dementia who are treated at Milton Keynes University Hospital.
Dementia is affecting more and more lives locally and nationally. In Milton Keynes alone, there are currently estimated to be 2,827 people aged over 65 who are living with a dementia diagnosis – a figure expected to rise significantly in the coming years as the city’s population grows and matures. Many of these individuals will require hospital care at some point, often at times of heightened anxiety and confusion for both patients and their loved ones.
The new appeal aims to fund meaningful, compassionate enhancements for people with dementia including calming environments, sensory and distraction items, as well as using enriching music and art to bring joy and smiles to people with dementia, their families and the staff who care for them.
Milton Keynes Hospital Charity works alongside clinical teams to fund projects that go beyond core NHS provision, enhancing the experience of patients, families and staff at the hospital. The Dementia Appeal builds on existing charitable investment in dementia‑friendly spaces, such as ward garden improvements, that allow patients living with dementia or delirium to safely step outside for fresh air and calm.
Vanessa Holmes, Associate Director of Charity and Fundraising at Milton Keynes Hospital Charity, said:
“A hospital environment can be overwhelming for someone living with dementia. Through this appeal, we want to reduce distress, create calm, and help patients feel safer and more understood during their time in our care. It’s about dignity, compassion and making the small changes that can have a huge impact.
“The charity is inviting the local community, businesses and supporters to get involved, whether through donations, fundraising activities or simply spreading awareness of the appeal. Every contribution will help create more dementia‑friendly hospital spaces and support staff and volunteers in delivering the best possible care.”
Vanessa continued: “We know from past experience that the generous people of Milton Keynes can make a huge difference to the success of our appeals. Not long ago, they helped to raise over £1m which, when coupled with the trust’s own investment, enabled our amazing Cancer Centre to be built. We recognise that dementia is affecting so many lives and loved ones and everyone’s support will make a serious difference.”
