Tips for Onboarding New Employees

People are now far more likely to move jobs regularly, which can be good for employees looking for new challenges or to gain new skills. However, it can also be frustrating for employers.

Employees may leave businesses on the hook for projects that they were involved in or be more generally short-staffed. This means that it’s important to be able to replace and onboard new employees quickly and effectively, helping them to become part of the team both interpersonally and in terms of productivity.

Here are some tips for onboarding new hires:

Properly describe the job role

Before even interviewing, it’s important to properly describe the role you want to fill in the job description. If candidates enter a role and it is not what they expect or want, then employers won’t even get the chance to onboard them properly. This means they will be confused and may even mentally check out or leave the role early. Ensure that roles being recruited for are well defined.

Formalise a new starter process

The process of new starter onboarding should be workshopped and formalised to fit your company’s way of working and company culture. This may involve the production of a welcome pack for new employees with all important information. As well as assigning a mentor or buddy that can intuit how to make a new employee feel welcome, or ensuring that jargon and workplace wellbeing are explained.

Seek new employee feedback

Those coming into the company are often some of the best to ask for feedback on how the company operates. As fresh eyes, they can provide valuable insights that others who have been at the business longer may not notice. That said, new employees can feel pressured to say they have no critique, as they don’t yet feel comfortable sharing their true opinions in their new workplace. As a result, their willingness to share their thoughts should also be considered a measure of how well you have onboarded them.
