New business is true calling for motorsport engineer

A former manufacturing engineer with Formula 1 giant, Mercedes High Performance Powertrains (HPP), has launched his own business.

Danny Speirs founded True Position CNC in a bid to help companies to manufacture complex components more efficiently and reduce their carbon footprint.

True Position CNC, based in Corby, offers remote 3,4 and 5 axis CNC programming services for engineering organisations that manufacture high-performance parts. The company can also help businesses to maximise their machine tool investment, enabling them to operate 24/7.

Danny can work with businesses as a freelance, external manufacturing engineer and consultant. Using OPENMIND’s innovative hyperMILL CAD/CAM software to programme and simulate tool paths and optimise processes, Danny can help manufacturers and engineers to reduce part lead time and material wastage prior to the parts being manufactured on a machine.

Danny said: “I have been working in engineering roles since 1998. In the last 15 years, I have worked predominately in the Formula 1 sector, programming and machining high-specification parts for several trophy-winning motorsport teams, including Mercedes HPP and Cosworth.

“More recently I have found myself thinking more about productivity and efficiency and how programming with CAD/CAM software in the right way can save money on materials and reduce carbon emissions. I truly believe that this is where I can use my skills and experience to benefit other businesses in the manufacturing sector.

“By utilising OPENMIND’S fully licensed and up to date hyperMILL CAD/CAM software, I can provide clients with structured, easy-to-follow CAM files; clear supporting machine and tooling set-up documentation; and remote prove out support.
The native CAM files can then be used by the client to post out the code to ensure machine compatibility.”

Since starting True Position CNC at the end of last year, Danny has managed to secure a start-up grant of £2,000 with the Business and IP Centre (BIPC) Northamptonshire. He was also invited to give a talk about his journey from teenage apprentice to business owner at Silverstone UTC – a centre of excellence for young people wanting to break into high performance engineering.

Looking to the future, Danny is keen to work with more manufacturers and engineering companies in the region.

“We are fortunate to be based at the epicentre of British Motorsport, with leading Formula 1 teams based in Northamptonshire, Oxfordshire and Milton Keynes. We also have a wealth of aerospace and precision engineering businesses in close proximity that I would love to work with.

“Our clients range from small ‘one man band’ engineering businesses who require additional ad hoc support to free up their time, bring in expertise for complex component manufacture, or to undertake full projects from concept to delivery which may otherwise be out of reach. We can also help larger companies by covering short-term spikes in programming workload or covering off between hires, working with existing manufacturing teams to deliver a seamless extension.

“We do this by ensuring we are at the forefront of CNC programming, utilising the full features the latest CAD/CAM software offers, and keeping up to date with the latest tooling advancements and machining capabilities. We can also offer a rapid turnaround and flexibility to meet tight deadlines and exceed customer expectations.”
