In a county rich with culinary talent, few restaurants have shaped out a legacy as enduring, or as loved, as The Palmichael.
This year, the Burton Latimer restaurant added yet another accolade to its name, taking home the Taste of England Award at the Discover Northamptonshire Tourism Awards. It follows two major wins at last year’s Weetabix Northamptonshire Food & Drink Awards, standing among the region’s most celebrated dining destinations.
For a restaurant that has quietly built its reputation over four and a half decades, this recognition feels both well‑earned and deeply personal. Awards like these don’t just raise the profile of the family‑run Italian restaurant, they shine a light on the passion, consistency and hospitality that have kept guests returning generation after generation.
“We were incredibly proud to win the Taste of England Award,” said Maria Walker, who leads the front‑ of house. “It’s amazing to be recognised in this way, and even now, months later, guests are still congratulating us. After 45 years, we still meet people who tell us they’ve only just discovered The Palmichael, so awards like this really help people find us.”
The Palmichael’s story began in 1981, when Vincenzo and Angela Palmiero opened the doors to what would become one of Northamptonshire’s longest standing dining venues. Today, the next generation, Maria and her brother, Head Chef Michael Palmiero, continue the family tradition, blending heritage with a modern twist.
Michael’s menu is a reflection of that balance: timeless Italian classics, alongside seasonal specials and new dishes that keep regulars intrigued. Antipasti, pasta, steaks, meat and fish dishes are prepared with care, using the finest ingredients and produce sourced from trusted Northamptonshire suppliers and artisan Italian suppliers.
The ground‑floor dining room, with space for 45 guests, is often fully booked – a testament to its loyal following. But the restaurant’s thoughtful expansion in recent years has opened up new possibilities. A cosy snug now welcomes guests for pre or after dinner drinks, while the first floor offers an elegant, versatile space for 35 to 40 diners. Complete with its own bar, the first floor has become a favourite for private celebrations, business lunches and corporate entertaining. Guests can enjoy the main menu or work with the team to create bespoke set menus for their special event.
“Extending the restaurant has given us so much more scope,” added Maria. “We want to welcome as many guests as possible creating special memories, especially those who have supported us for so many years.”
That is, perhaps, the secret to The Palmichael’s longevity: a commitment to authenticity, genuine hospitality, and doing things properly. Awards are welcome, but for the Palmiero family, the real reward is seeing guests return again and again.
After 45 years, The Palmichael is more than a restaurant; it continues to evolve while staying true to its roots, with no sign of slowing down.
