IT experts from Northamptonshire will drive home how businesses can protect themselves from the rising risk of cyber threats at a free event mixing golf and online security.
NewGen IT Services of Irchester is hosting a face-to-face Cyber Security Awareness event at Collingtree Park Golf Club in Northampton in June to educate businesses about the growing need for cyber security.
NewGen IT felt the need to hold a free advisory event for local businesses as the company is seeing an increased demand for its services as a cyber security partner as these attacks become more prevalent and harder to spot.

“We wanted to run this free event because cyber attacks can cause catastrophic damage to businesses and their impact should not be underestimated.
“With more and more UK companies being hit by a breach or cyber attack in the past year, the threat to UK business is becoming more frequent and increasingly sophisticated.
“We are holding this event to answer any questions from local businesses and to provide them with the facts and tools to enable them to prevent an attack on their organisation. They will also have the opportunity to talk to like-minded businesses over food and drink and play some golf.”
One of the most common ways an online threat gets through a business’s security system is because of unrestricted access and control to networks. Cyber criminals can take advantage of these poorly secured networks to steal personal data. In fact, the average cost of even a single breach due to ransomware and poor password usage is around one million US dollars.
The June event will include a talk on cyber security, a seminar and a question and answer session followed by a buffet and a round of golf. The team will also advise on the new technologies businesses can learn and use to prevent an attack or stop one in progress.
Here are some top cybersecurity tips from NewGen IT in the meantime:
- Set up appropriate levels of access for employees, so that junior employees can’t have access to more important financial records, client information or trade secrets. This information should be strictly for senior employees.
- Run drills. Cyber security should be treated in a similar way to fire drills. Companies should be engaging with cyber security experts, such as NewGen IT to organise penetration testing, which would see the expert attempt to gain access to networks, under supervision, and act to defuse the situation.
- Keep applications and software updated so they can effectively fight off new threats. If you fail to keep your operating systems and applications up to date, it’s like leaving your home unlocked – someone can break in at any moment! There are new methods of hacking being discovered every day, and your systems need to be updated to fight new threats.
