Milton Keynes City Council is supporting local community organisations and charities to make major sustainability upgrades to their buildings. Groups and public organisations could receive up to 50% of match funding to support works that provide a significant reduction in carbon emissions, and ultimately help us with our goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2030.
One of the most recent organisations to benefit from The Carbon Offset Fund is Olney Town Council, which has made transformational changes to the historic Olney Centre which houses a community space, library, and a preschool. The Olney Centre was built in 1877 and was in desperate need of a new heating system. Through the Carbon Offset Fund, the building underwent work to improve energy efficiency – including the installation of solar panels, LED lighting, a heat pump system, and double-glazed windows. Olney Town Council received £161,000 from the City Council to help make these vital upgrades possible. We are reviewing applications from organisations on a rolling basis, and I would encourage groups to apply.
The Carbon Offset Fund is open to:
- Milton Keynes-based community groups and community organisations
- Public organisations, including schools
- Parish and town councils
- Local charities and not-for-profit organisations
- Bulk domestic schemes active within the borough
Projects could include anything from installing solar panels, low-energy lighting, upgrading windows and doors, insulation, or replacing old heating systems with heat pumps. We are committed to taking meaningful steps to reduce emissions, and this work helps organisations save money on their energy bills while having a positive impact on the environment.
A similar programme for residents is expected to be announced later this year.
